On September 13, 2021, I pushed the new website for Untitled UI live.
Abi, one of my co-founders at Himalayas, convinced me to "pre-launch" on Twitter by teasing a free version of the UI kit.
I wasn't really comfortable doing this because I didn't think it was "ready". I've always struggled with working on projects for too long, so decided to just send it and get some early feedback. 2 days after pushing the site live, I shared a preview on Twitter and it blew up:
3 weeks later, the free version has been downloaded over 6k times.
I'm still surprised and humbled by how well it's going, and excited to keep improving it and working on growing it.
Around July, I'd finished building out the foundations of Untitled UI (although at that time, it was called "Cube").
I'd started working on a complete redesign of another project, Himalayas, a remote hiring platform that is starting to take off.
I used the Figma UI kit that I'd been building in parallel as the foundation for the Design System for Himalayas 2.0. I was blown away by how fast and easy it was to design using this new system of components, which motivated me to go full send on building it out further.
Earlier this year, I was working on a project and started exploring best practices for building out my design system in Figma. I dived into commercial Figma UI kits and design systems, but was pretty underwhelmed...
The idea for Untitled UI came out of necessity. We tried a bunch of Figma UI kits, but found they lacked in size, flexibility, or quality — usually all three — and we ended up having to remake all the poor-quality components.
We needed an “ultimate starter” kit for new freelance projects and design systems, rather than having to start from scratch each time. We were sick of rebuilding the same common components over and over again... It's also the boring part in the design process!
Untitled UI was built to solve this. You can use this UI kit in unlimited projects. In fact, we designed it this way — to be as neutral, flexible, and scalable as possible to use as a kickstarter for any project.
