I always thought it was a little strange how a $70k salary doesn’t really feel like a $70k salary.
You see the number in the offer letter, do the quick math, and think, “That’s around $5,800 a month.”
Then your first paycheck shows up and it’s closer to $3,900.
Taxes, FICA, benefits, retirement contributions, and everything else can make a pretty big difference.
That’s actually what led me to build UsePaycheckCalculator.
I wanted a simple way to answer the question people usually care about:
“How much am I actually going to take home?”
Right now, it covers all 50 states plus DC and lets you calculate take-home pay, federal and state taxes, FICA, hourly pay, salary, and different pay frequencies.
I’m also working on things like bonus taxes, overtime, net-to-gross calculations, W-4 calculations, and a few other features people seem to be searching for.
The calculator itself is only part of what I’m interested in.
I’m also curious whether a small, focused tool can actually compete with the big payroll and finance websites that already dominate this space.
No big team behind it. No huge budget. Just me building, testing things, trying different SEO ideas, and spending probably more time than I should in Google Search Console.
The site is still pretty early, so I’d genuinely appreciate some feedback.
