February 20, 2023 2 free user onboarding sessions later...

The last 2 weeks the main thing I was doing was marketing. I am happy to say I've had onboarding calls with 2 other SaaS founders.

For one, I am happy that this time there is interest (my previous projects didn't get ANY traction). Secondly, I am proud of myself, because I definitely am an introvert. Afterward, it felt good having done the calls.

The best thing about that was that I got some feedback before really launching. Which made me realize that my product is waaay to complex for any meaningful self-service.

I also found out that one particular feature was missing and that one feature I had (planning the exact delays of the emails) was too much config work. I am going to scrap that feature and set sane defaults for all users.

Now that all the marketing copy is geared towards onboarding, I think it'll be way easier setting sane defaults. A general purpose tool is always more difficult to steer than a purpose-made product (email sequence vs onboarding sequence in this case).

Now, that required quite a lot of back and forth technically. I want an algorithm that pays attention to user activity and doesn't blindly select sending frequency.

Apart from that, I also worked on making user-journey easier to understand by having an in-app onboarding flow that guides the user through creating their sequence. Currently still working on that point.

In two days, I am having a third founder sign up for user-journey and try it.

February 8, 2023 The process of building User-Journey in 1 month

After my previous SaaS didn't find the market-fit, I decided I need to ship faster and don't invest so much time with actually building something, but marketing it and refining its position in the market.

I took most of the codebase for authentication, database modelling and frontend from my previous Saas, Validate, and started building for one month with little breaks inbetween. Today, 8th February I'm done with the MVP. I also built a landing page and my strategy will be to "manually" onboard people that sign up so I can see how they are using User-Journey and help them with stuff that's not self-explanatory yet.

Here's the landing page

Looks interesting! I wonder if you could reframe the value to "talk with users before they churn"

I can see it being useful for indie hackers who are prone to spending more time building than actually talking to customers. It's too easy to build and not talk to real users and end up no where. This could be a great tool to avoid that trap. I'm curious how it will help you build and improve your own product!

Sure, at the end its just a tool you can use for many different things. I'm currently even using it for the early-access signup where people get an automated email after signing up. Just created a one-email-sequence for that.

But you are right, I definitely have to be more use-case specific and give examples on the marketing page. Thanks Peter :)

Hey Bengin, I found that you are giving early access pricing, how long you have planned to give?
Have you got any feedback about your product from the current users?

    1. 1

I am planning to give it as long as I need to get good product-market-fit :) And then I'll probably add a free trial, so people can see how well it works before commiting to pay.

I just made it available for people to sign up so there is no feedback of actual users, only 2 people that I spoke with about if and how it would help them.

You can find your early adopters on LinkedIn, you can reach out to them to try your product so that you can get feedback, it may help you to fine-tune your product :)

I could :) I didn't dabble with LinkedIn pretty much at all until now. Maybe that'd be worth a shot.

Yes, you can give a try

February 8, 2023 How I got the idea for User-Journey

Actual date of this happening: beginning of January

While buliding my previous SaaS, Validate, I noticed that there were a bunch of users that just signed up for free but didn't do anything. Then there were a bunch of users signing up, starting to create a project but then I never saw them again.

Well, I think ever indiehacker can relate with that. Why did they leave? Why didn't some even try?

Each day I reached out to all the new signups and personally asked for their feedback and their use cases to learn more. User-Journey is basically the idea of automating that daily checkup. Where are my current users, do they need any help or resources? If yes, send an email.

I like this! Although there are competitive products that do similiar things, your UI seems very intuitive.

    1. 1

Thanks :) But most competitive products send static email sequences, not depending on actions that users took inside your app. Or maybe I just didn't do good research, maybe you can name a few so I can learn more about them

      1. 1

Sure! Mixpanel and Intercom are a couple examples. Although I heard Mixpanel may have deprecated some of that functionality. I haven't used it in a few years. I think Userflow can do this too, but would probably have to be integrated with another tool, either via Zapier or directly.

        1. 1

I see :) Yeah I think Mixpanel doesn't have that anymore. Intercom and Userflow are hyperexpensive, like for smaller businesses it's prohibitively expensive.

I guess I'll be able to offer a little free tier even with fair pricing above that

          1. 1

Good call! Those other apps are indeed way more expensive, and have way more (bloated?) features. If you can offer something simple, functional, and affordable you could really have a winner on your hands. Best of luck, my friend!

              Thanks Kane!

About

While building my previous SaaS, I noticed that so many users just sign up and forget. Or sign up, click around a bit and leave. So many leads basically that I was not using.
