March 18, 2026 Introduction to Vector Privacy

In a world where every message you send, every contact you communicate with, and every piece of metadata attached to your conversations is being collected, stored, and monetized, the question of who actually controls your communication has never been more important. Most people assume that using a messaging app means their conversations are private. The reality is far more complicated, and for the vast majority of popular platforms, far more troubling.

Vector Privacy was built to change that. Developed by Formless Labs, Vector is a free, open-source, decentralized messaging application built from the ground up on a Privacy by Principle philosophy. That means privacy is not a setting you have to turn on, not a premium feature you pay for, and not a promise written in a terms of service document that can be quietly updated. It is the foundational architectural principle behind every single decision made in building this application.

At the heart of Vector is the Nostr protocol, a censorship-resistant relay network operating across more than 850 independent nodes in over 40 countries. There is no central server, no single company in control, and no infrastructure that can be hacked, shut down, or handed over to a government. Account creation requires zero personal information, no email address, no phone number, nothing. A single click generates a cryptographic key pair and you are ready to communicate. Vector also collects absolutely no metadata, meaning there is no record of who you talk to, when, or how often.

What makes Vector genuinely different from every other privacy messenger on the market is the combination of protections it delivers simultaneously. End-to-end encryption via the IETF-standardized MLS protocol, true decentralization via Nostr, zero-knowledge account creation, no ads, no investors, and no data monetization of any kind. It is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, and is funded entirely by grants and community donations from people who believe that private communication should be a right, not a product.

Vector Privacy is currently in open beta and growing. If you have ever felt uneasy about who might be reading your messages, tracking your conversations, or building a profile of your relationships and habits, Vector was built for you. This is what private communication looks like when it is designed to be truly free.

About

Vector Privacy exists because the fundamental right to private communication has been systematically eroded by the very platforms people rely on to talk to each other. Vector changes this.
