VELOCE AI
AI Download Manager. $5 lifetime. 3-day trial.
I spent 5 months building a $5 IDM alternative — here's what I learned
I've been frustrated with download managers for over a decade. IDM charges $25/year and looks like it's from 2004. Free alternatives miss downloads on modern sites. I had this idea sitting in my head for years.
In January 2026, I finally sat down and built it.
VELOCE AI is a Windows download manager with a real-time AI engine that monitors 32 connections simultaneously, a built-in Chromium browser so you never need extensions, and smart content discovery. The AI actually adapts — it kills slow tunnels, spawns replacements, and detects CDN rate limits.
I'm a solo dev in South Africa. No team, no funding, just a ThinkPad and too much coffee. The hardest part wasn't the download engine — it was training the AI to detect downloadable content on sites where static URL matching fails. Took months.
The pricing was intentional: $5 one-time, lifetime updates. I hate subscriptions.
Just launched on Product Hunt today. If you've ever been annoyed by IDM's pricing or download managers that miss files — give it a try. Free 3-day trial, no credit card required.

I've been frustrated with download managers since 2010 — paying $25/year for IDM that looks like Windows XP, or using free tools that miss half the downloads. The idea for VELOCE AI sat in my head for years while I learn

Good question. After 5 months building I understand IDM's overhead — but not their pricing. $25/year for a product that barely changes is rent-seeking. My cost is basically zero to serve each user. A one-time $5 covers my Gumroad fees and a few coffees. That's fair.
The thing I'm curious about isn't the AI.
It's whether building the product changed how you think about IDM's pricing.
Five months of work has a way of making old frustrations look different.
