I read the book "The mom test" and in parallel I communicate with potential customers.

During the interview, I got some awesome insights about the pains and needs of users.

I am sure that I own only a small piece of the big picture. But I continue to decompose the task and understand education in its very essence

September 14, 2019 150+ emails on the waiting list

Today I went to check the number of email addresses (as each of us does) and saw 167 emails in "wait-list".

I started the project a month ago and this is still not enough, but so far I am pleased with the progress.

Landing page actually did not help me much (I collected only 9 addresses), but searching and talking with people helped a lot to get some kind of minimal trust.

Now I feel more responsibility, and I have a lot of energy to achieve my goal.

By the way, my goal for the next six months is 3k MRR 🤩🤩🤩

Yes, I love such stories - people actually talking to customers and trying to help them, then gathering a small audience of more loyal users, who become first customer base, and help to polish V1 of the product.

It's not sexy. It doesn't scale. 167 emails is not 5,000. But it's exactly what is needed in the beginning.

    Congrats @Gurachek!

    1. 2

I completely agree! But sexuality does not arise just like that, it is also a result of hard work.

I also like the opinion of Paul Graham on the need to do things that don't scale :)

Direct dialogue and the desire of people to buy a product is what I need now 😁

  2. 2

Can you elaborate on how you search for people to talk to?

    1. 2

I have four channels – linkedin, facebook, instagram, telegram chats.

I try to search for specific groups / chats and look for people (mainly teenagers) who are going to study PHP and ask someone for help on some issues or ask for advice. I have 4 years of commercial experience and another 4 years of self-study, so I help solve problems for free, explain complicated topics, and give advice. And in between I talk about my service, which will develop an individual approach to training for the user. This usually interests people and the interview begins 😁

  3. 1

How do you plan on achieving your next goal of 3k MRR?

  4. 1

    Can you give more context?

167 emails that won't respond are very different from 167 emails that will respond within a day.

167 emails from 200 landing page visits is outstanding, 167 emails from 10,000 visits is worrying.

Side note - Make sure you keep engaging that list. If you don't engage them until your product is ready they're going to go cold.

  5. 1

    Hey Valera!

Great job! Personally I'm stuck at a good 12 persons that joined mine, so good job.

What has been you main way of aquiring the subscribers?

You say your goal is 3k MMR, but it also says your app is free - how are you planning to monetize it?

I like your landing page over all, the videos showing the workflow etc.
But just a couple critique points I took while browsing -

    1. Your copy in the header is too long - you write a lot of words about your product and what it does. I would recommend writing a short main copy of what value it gives me. An example could be "Viebook let's you learn better" or simply "Learn better with Viebook" and then a two-liner underneath describing your product a bit more.

    2. The image in the header is strectched, atleast on my screeen, and has dummy (lorem ipsum) text and is low quality. That doesn't scream premium product to me as the first thing. I had to scroll down to actually feel the value.

    3. Get an SSL-certificate. It's good for SEO, and it personally sticks out to me as a professional webdeveloper. Especially(!) if the login or main app is not under SSL.

Hope you could use it, and feel free to ask if you got any questions - would love to help.

    Best,
    Nicolaj

      Hey!

Now I use linkedin, several forums and I am looking at different sites for people who have just started or are going to study PCP. I emailing them, send GIFs and suggest discussing their desire and pains.

I have not figured out the prices yet. I need to make a few blocks for the "Pricing" block. First of all I need to realize for what result I'll charge money and how much it can cost (I don’t want to copy the price from competitors or set it randomly XD).
      Monetization - monthly subscription :)

      1. I understand what you mean. I think I'm just afraid that my project will be misunderstood, but you're right, tomorrow I’ll change it for something simpler!
      2. Got it! The first thing the user sees is very important, I have to work harder on this
      3. All right!

Thank you very much for the feedback, it is very important for me.

      In touch 🤘

June 12, 2019 Can you give me feedback on my landing page?

Hi guys!

I'm here playing with the creation of the landing page and trying to understand how I need to convey the value of the service and the basic idea to the user.

Can you please go to https://viebook.co and tell me your impressions and thoughts at the time of viewing?

My big question after looking at the landing page is this: where does the content come from?

    1. 3

+1 I also am wondering what topics are available to learn? I'm getting some signal from the pictures that there are a few programming concepts and other conventional subjects like Math, Chem, etc. -- but what does this platform provide that others (Khan Academy, Codecademy, Udemy, and so on) don't?

      1. 1

I understand what you mean. Do you think it is necessary to explicitly indicate on the main page topics that the user can study?

Viebook has quite ordinary topics to study, right. The difference from the services that you indicated, only in the way of learning..

But each topic adapts to the student, allowing him to improve the quality and speed of learning, the level of understanding and mastery of the material thanks to the algorithms and methodologists who adapt these materials to your features and makes an individual development plan (which changes with you and allows you to track progress).

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it!

        1. 1

Awesome, I'd double down on the differentiating features and really make those come to life on the landing page. The question you'll have to answer for people like me (I regularly use or have used sites like codecademy, khan academy, udemy, etc.) is "what makes this one different / better?".

My personal suggestion: maybe rework the tagline? Something to highlight that you use data to personalize the learning experience instead of providing the same course to everyone (assuming I understand the value prop correctly).

I also find GIFs / videos (< 2 min) super helpful in quickly demonstrating differentiating features. Not sure if that's plausible in this case, but something to think about.

          1. 1

Yes, you understood the main idea correctly!

Fully agree to the account of gifs, it will definitely be (instead of a thousand words haha).

Oh, how difficult it is to invent these slogans XD
Well, I will invent something, I do not want to be like the sites that sell courses.

    2. 1

Hmm .. I think this is really important enough and should be transparent to the user. Thank!

The materials themselves are taken from open sources and are worked out by methodologists and teachers. (such an idea)

  2. 2

Your main copy on homepage seems to be very light. It should be a bit more bright or bold so that it should attract user to read.
My sight was focusing more on the image at right side rather then main copy...

Rest the page looks pretty good

    1. 1

Got it, thank you very much! The delicate text seemed beautiful to me, but it turned out to be not convenient 😂

  3. 2

Just some design tips for your landing page:
There is problems with the balance of typography, between headline and a paragraph ,not enough contrast in font weight in the header. Try increasing font weight for heading to 300-400.

Your paragraph length is too long, try reducing it to more optimal character length per line like around 50-60 characters. :)

    1. 1

Thank you very much for your help, I will fix it!

  4. 2
    • Features and blog are broken in the navbar.
    • Not sure what I'm meant to focus on. Way to much going on.
    • I would limit the width to 1200px or somewhere around there.
    • I agree with @may about the lorem ipsum text
    • The image also makes me want to click 1,2,3,4,5 and i can't
    • I would start with the current problems of learning, then how viebook fixes them, then features. That would be a nice flow.
    • Change the bottom CTA
    1. 1

Hi, first of all thanks for your attention!

      1. I just did not do them yet XD
      2. Got it!
      3. I guess I didn’t adapt it well for different resolutions.
      4. I also agree, I will make it more real
      5. A very interesting idea, by the way!
      6. Thank you, think about it.
      7. Silly name, yes? :)
  5. 2

    from designer view:

    • the background is too heavy and blurred, if you want it, make there opacity or place it differently
    • text with the light font is less readable, maybe try with bolder font for the header and paragraph
    • Don't use examples with "lorem ipsun", that's mean you didn't make anything for someone and I will be your first user ;)
June 12, 2019 I started developing my MVP

This is my second project as an entrepreneur. I have a lot of hypotheses regarding education and I have my own vision of what education should be like in 50 years.

I am conducting a user research and development of a prototype that will be ready in 3 months (and which I obviously will throw out 😆).

My main hypothesis is:
Personalizing the training plan and personalizing the material according to the level and personality characteristics of the user will help him learn more effectively, better understand himself and live a more conscious life, understanding his own weaknesses and strengths.

Congrats on getting started! What kind of product are you planning to build?

By the way, your hypothesis definitely seems true. Have the beneficial effects of personalization on education not been proven yet? I assume this is why smaller class sizes, private schools, and individual tutors, are desirable over larger class sizes, public schools, and generic lectures.

    1. 1

Hey, quick comment on class size. I spent my 20s pouring everything I had into teaching, curriculum design and running a brick and mortar edu business aimed at elementary school-aged kids and came away from it seeing the US focus on small class sizes as one of its biggest weaknesses.

If you dive into the research, you'll find that smaller class size is moderately beneficial for very young children, but that the biggest factor at all levels is the variation between teachers. (Curriculum is notoriously hard to test in the kind of research, though)

At the simplest level, by decreasing class sizes, you increase the number of teachers needed and lower the average quality. Taking the top 20% of anything will lead to poorer quality than taking the top 5%.

Beyond this effect, there's a strong economic argument. In a world with constrained resources, consider the following three options:

      • A class with twice as many students.
      • A class that meets half as many hours per week.
      • A class taught by a teacher with skills such that their salary is 1/2 the typical rate.

I think most would pick the first option if they really thought about or had a chance to see each in action. This is essentially what both South Korea and Singapore do to get far better results and for less money than most western countries. It's also what Jaime Escalante did in East LA a generation ago (classes got to 50+ and were fantastically successful even in a very disadvantaged district).

None of this is an argument against personalization or flipped classrooms. A lot of dedicated teachers do both to a surprising degree, even with larger classes.

When I was a teacher, I carried a binder with me as I paced around the class calling on students and used a short-hand to record how many times each one had answered and what their mistakes were every single class. I couldn't program then, but I entered them into a spreadsheet so I could see who I had to push harder to participate, how much we needed to review and where the curriculum had weak spots. It took a while to learn to do this effectively, but for the last several years I was teaching, it was second nature, the after class analysis only took about 10 minutes on most days and I trained other teachers to do the same. It was completely worth it in terms of results. Even a decade later, former students and their parents still find me online to say thanks.

On a business side, it was pretty capital intensive and hard to scale, though.

This is counterintuitive and thus pretty fascinating. I suppose the underrated challenges, then, are to figure out how to incentivize more great people to teach, and to evaluate teachers effectively so we can give the great ones more students, even if it means bigger classes. (But hopefully class size shrinks as being a teacher becomes more attractive.)

Solving these problems could be a very satisfying mission to build a startup around, if there was a good way to monetize it, and if the bureaucracy of the education system wasn't such a pain to deal with.

        1. 1

Status and salary are both a factor in a lot of East Asia. Aside from the two countries already mentioned, Vietnam's educational system is a fantastic example of doing more with less.

Solving these problems could be a very satisfying mission to build a startup around, if there was a good way to monetize it, and if the bureaucracy of the education system wasn't such a pain to deal with.

Check out Jason Roberts and Math Academy. It's not a solution for all, but it's turned Pasedena, a previously struggling district into a powerhouse and it's a shrewd pairing of an online business that owns the curriculum with a non-profit aimed at school districts.

At the end of the 2016-2017 pilot year, the twenty Math Academy 6th-graders from McKinley and Sierra Madre Middle School took the MDTP (Mathematics Diagnostic and Testing Project), which is used by the University of California to place incoming students into the appropriate math sequence. If these 6th graders were entering freshman at UC San Diego, four would have been placed directly into calculus for engineering majors, eight would have placed into calculus for life science majors and the remaining eight into precalculus.

The program has grown considerably since 2017 and some of those students who are on their way to high school next year have already finished linear algebra and differential equations courses! I would be very surprised if a movie isn't made about it.

    2. 1

      HI, Courtland!

I plan to build an online service that quickly and at any time gives access to information that has already been adjusted to the characteristics of your personality! To make everything as simple as possible when you go to facebook and flip through the feed (but with more benefits 😄).

Amazing but this still remains a hypothesis that is not very willing to be tested online.

Oh yes, your statement is true. Personalization often wins when people explain something to other people, but when the system will do it .. I think it's hard to scale, but I’m quite interested in doing it.

      1. 1

Scaling personalization is a very interesting challenge to solve. Best of luck!

        1. 1

          I agree, thank you 🤩

  2. 2

Kudos! This is great, something has to change in the way education is handled currently - it's a century old method.

    1. 2

I'm more interested in changing people's attitude to education, and not poking a stick at this ancient monster XD
      Thanks for the comment!

      1. 2

I think this is key. Probably 85% of it is motivating the students and changing their attitude about what they're doing and why. It's great to see people working on this.

  3. 1

Why 3 months for your prototype? Can you start with a lofi version? Maybe customize learning plans manually for a handful of students?

  4. 1

Good luck with the development. How are you doing your user research ?
