Independent AI tools reviews for regular people

April 10, 2026 Building a one-person AI tools review site from scratch — what's working and what isn't

I launched VirtualUncle about a month ago. Independent AI tools reviews, no sponsors, everything tested hands-on. One person, built entirely with the tools I review.

The stack: Claude Pro for all writing and research ($20/month), Make.com for automation ($9/month), Midjourney for visuals ($10/month), WordPress on shared hosting ($2/month). Total operating cost under $50/month.

What's working: the content resonates. My OpenClaw guide got picked up on Hacker News. A GitHub repos post hit 128K views on Reddit. The editorial voice (opinionated, honest, no fluff) seems to be the differentiator in a space full of generic AI listicles.

What isn't working: SEO. The domain has a bad history (used to be a VR gaming aggregator) and Google doesn't trust it yet. 19 articles live, most still showing "crawled, not indexed" in Search Console. Working through a 60-day domain rehabilitation plan right now.

The distribution problem is real. Building the content is maybe 20% of the work. Getting people to find it is the other 80%. Currently relying on X (reply guy strategy), Reddit (karma building phase), and starting backlink outreach this week.

Revenue: $0 so far. This is a long game. The plan is affiliate links on tool reviews once traffic exists, digital products (automation blueprints), and eventually a newsletter.

Anyone else running a solo content operation with AI tools? Curious how others are solving the distribution problem.

About

Every AI tools list is either untested fluff or written for engineers. I test tools myself and write honest reviews for regular people.
