The easiest way to save data and visualize it

July 5, 2022 The Origin of Visualbolt

In November 2020 I built an app to track my weight, fat percentage, etc. I thought about publishing it somewhere a few times, but I felt it was too raw. I didn't feel like spending too much time polishing it and making it easy to use. I tweeted about it a couple of times and it got no attention. I was ok with not having to polish and market it.

My wife and I were the only two users of the app. We knew how to use it, it gave us a chart with weight evolution, weight history, etc. We were happy with it.

Some time later, in January 2022, I saw this tweet from Adam Wathan, which said:

Is there an app out there that acts as a simple "track anything" tool?

You create a new "thing to track" and whenever you feel like it you
manually enter an updated value and it logs it with the timestamp
and lets you graph it over time.

I started thinking how hard it could be to adapt the app I created to track my weight to become a more flexible tracking tool. It would be a nightmare. I discarded it right away.

But that made me see a problem I couldn't see before. After reading his question, I started seeing situations where I'd have liked to have that flexible app.

Long story short, those situations started adding up, and once I got some extra time, I decided to build it from scratch. If nobody wanted it I could use it myself, it wouldn't be the first time :)

About

I was missing a way to easily visualize any data I want in a flexible way. For example body metrics like weight or height, but at the same time things like whether or not I've worked out.
