June 18, 2026 I'm a bike mechanic who taught himself to code because I couldn't afford a €36,000/year secretary.

My name is Alex. I run a wrench in Filderstadt, Germany. Where I come from, we have a saying: need is your best teacher. Mine taught me to code.

If you've never worked a trade, here's what people miss about it — your hands are never free. They're dirty, they're holding a part, they're on a wrench or a screw. All day. So when I needed to take notes during a repair — this bike needs a shifter, that one needs pads, this customer wants it by Friday — I did what everyone does. I walked the workshop with a pen and a scrap of paper.

And every time, the same problem: I needed those hands for the actual work. Put down the wrench, pick up the pen, lose the thread, put down the pen, pick the wrench back up. A hundred times a day. The notes were half-finished, half-legible, and half of them I lost.

So I went looking for a voice tool. Something that would let me just talk and have my words land somewhere I could use them. My requirements were simple, or so I thought: private, offline, and it had to actually work. Everything I found failed at least one. They wanted my voice uploaded to someone's server. They wanted a monthly subscription. And they all needed a solid internet connection — which is a joke when you're standing in a metal workshop or a basement with no signal.

I couldn't find the tool I needed. So I decided to build it.

I had no formal training. I learned the way I learned bike repair — at night, one problem at a time, refusing to quit until it worked. Version 1. Version 2. It broke constantly. I rebuilt it constantly.

Then, somewhere around version 1.4, something clicked.

I started walking the floor of my workshop, hands deep in a bike, just talking: "Shifter, Shimano XT, 10-speed. Tire, Schwalbe Smart Sam. Brake pads, Tektro." I did a full diagnostic of ten bikes in under ten minutes — and the notes were more detailed and more accurate than anything I'd ever managed with pen and paper. My hands never left the work.

That felt like magic. The first time, I actually stopped and stared at the screen.

That tool became VoicePad AI. It runs entirely on your own device — 100% offline, on-device Whisper, no cloud, no account, no subscription. Your voice never leaves your machine. It works on Windows, Android, iOS and macOS, one license covers all four, and you pay once. The first 1,000 founding members get it free, for life. And the part I'm proudest of: I built the entire thing by dictating the code prompts through VoicePad itself.

I built it because I needed it. Now I'm sharing it .

VoicePad — we're alive, we grow, we create!
