Ghost Mannequin Photos That Show the Fit
Hey Indie Hackers,
If you’ve ever talked to an e-commerce apparel seller, you've probably heard about "ghost mannequin" (or invisible mannequin) photography. It’s the standard way clothing is displayed on sites like Shopify, Amazon, and Zara—where the garment looks three-dimensional and worn, but without a visible mannequin or model inside.
The problem? Producing them is a massive operational headache:
The traditional way: You shoot the garment on a plastic mannequin, take a second shot of the inside collar/neck on a board, and pay a studio retoucher $15–$40 per image to composite them in Photoshop.
The DIY way: Sellers spend 20–40 minutes per item manually cutting out hanger edges and trying to reconstruct the inner lining.
The turnaround: 3 to 7 days, costing hundreds to thousands of dollars per season drop.
While many AI tools in the fashion space focus on generating AI models or face-swaps, I noticed that serious merchants often avoid them. Generative models tend to "hallucinate" or alter the actual fabric drape, seams, and brand tags—which immediately triggers product returns when customers receive the physical item.
What catalog sellers actually want isn't synthetic models; they just want clean, uniform product photos that pass marketplace standards without the Photoshop invoice.
So I built Voidwear.
How it works: Instead of requiring multi-angle studio shoots, Voidwear collapses the pipeline into a single upload. You upload a regular photo shot on a hanger or standard mannequin:
It strips out the hanger/mannequin cleanly.
It intelligently reconstructs the hollow inner collar, neckline, and sleeves.
It strictly preserves original fabric texture, stitching, graphics, and labels.
It outputs directly in marketplace-compliant aspect ratios (Shopify, Amazon pure white, Etsy, etc.).
Where things stand & current learnings: We just rolled out the web MVP. The toughest product hurdle wasn't image generation—it was edge fidelity and consistency. Fashion sellers have zero tolerance for blurred prints or warped collars. We tuned the prompt and processing pipeline specifically to prioritize garment preservation over artistic generation.
Currently, anyone can test it with free daily credits (no credit card or complex signup required).
I'd love your thoughts and feedback:
Product UX & Output Quality: If you test an apparel photo on voidwear.app, how does the result look compared to what you’d expect from a manual edit?
Distribution Advice: For founders who have sold tools to Shopify / Amazon DTC merchants or vintage resellers, what early acquisition channels or partnerships worked best for you?
Thanks for reading! Looking forward to your feedback in the comments.
