An AI powered video journaling app

April 24, 2023 How I came up with the idea for Vournal

I was walking home one-night brainstorming product ideas. I wanted to capture everything I was thinking about and decided to record myself using the built-in iPhone camera app. This made capturing my ideas almost effortless. However, re-watching the videos to extract valuable and actionable information was tedious. I wanted the video to be transcribed automatically and I wanted my video journals to be organized in a better way. That's how I started on Vournal.

The app is in TestFlight right now. If you want to give it a try please let me know :)

    Thoughts:

    • Why video and not just audio?
    • App looks alright and buttons made sense. Though the book in the background was a bit odd. I think it's because you needed UI space for text overlay? If that's the case, why not have video as full screen and overlay text on that?

    I've personally been doing an audio journal for years and I'm thinking of building an app just for my own usage.

    1. Also use STT to gather data
    2. I still haven't found a good way to show that data.
    3. Send the audio to my podcast player (in-device transfer) 1 year later. Kinda like a podcast from past me.

      Thanks for the feedback.

      I started with a video because I think it's nice to be able to go back and see a video of yourself thinking out loud. However, it's not critical and I intend to allow the user to toggle between audio only and video.

      Love the idea of a podcast 1 year later. Been thinking of some other ideas to re-surface past journal content in a fun way. Think of a personal Twitter feed created from past journal entries.

      What is STT? And what type of journaling do you mainly do with your audio journal?

        STT = speech to text.

        Type of journaling is straight up talking to my future self assuming I’ll listen to it in a podcast from.

    Sounds like a cool idea. Way to find a problem you're having and build a solution!

About

I used to record myself using the camera app to capture my thoughts. And that led me to create a dedicated app for my video journals with automatic transcriptions.
