February 7, 2020 VSUAL Finished #5 Product of the Day

Really pleased with our Product Hunt launch yesterday! We finished #5 top product of the day with ~50 new user signups, ~20 seller applications and 3 prints sold (2 unframed, 1 framed). Got lots of really great questions and positive feedback. I'm really hoping that this activity will stay somewhat sustained, and not just be a blip 🤞

Some learnings:

  • Posting right at 12:01 PST seemed to work well. We got on the front page right away and stayed there
  • It meant staying up most of the night, but I think it was important to be online to answer questions quickly. It made the post feel like there was some activity.
  • Share everywhere! I really tried to share the post as much as possible, and encouraged people to vote by saying "we're on the front page of PH and we want to stay there!" I used liinks.co to link out to the post on all my social channels.
  • I sort of have no idea how PHs ranking algorithms work. We ended up ranked higher on the page than a few other posts with more upvotes. Unclear if this is based on a trending score, or if PH weights upvotes based on account credibility etc...

Anyways, all in all, really happy with how this went and excited for what comes next!

February 6, 2020 VSUAL on Front Page of Product Hunt!

Super excited to see VSUAL on the front page of PH. Currently we're in 6th place but I'm really hoping we can get to 5th place by the end of the day to get a badge 😍

Posting right at 12:01 PST seemed to have worked really well vs. other PH launches I've done.

I'll trade you an upvote for good vibes!

February 6, 2020 Shared VSUAL on Product Hunt

With a good number of artists on the platform and things in a pretty stable place, this felt like as good a time as any to share on PH. So far we seem to be doing well, currently #4! I'm really excited to get more eyes on the platform and hopefully get some more customers and artists!

February 4, 2020 Reached 30 artists selling on VSUAL

Today, our 30th artist opened a shop on VSUAL! Getting new artists on the platform can be challenging because many have already set up shops elsewhere, but once they do take the time to check out the platform, they are almost always really impressed with the UI and experience.

December 11, 2019 Launched VSUAL!

I'm feeling good about the site, and during the private beta, around 10 artists have created shops... I'm ready to go live! I let the artists know and prepare my initial social media posts etc... I do a few last minute tests to make sure I didn't break anything just before launching, and then I flip the switch!

October 1, 2019 Started private beta with artist friends

Luckily, I had a pretty good network of artist friends to reach out to (many of whom I worked with on emojibook.club) so I set up times to user test the very early version of the artist interface. For the next couple months I went through many feedback loops with the artists until I felt good with the interface I'd built.

July 1, 2019 Quit my job and began working on VSUAL

I'd always dreamt of trying to start my own business. This only really became an option in 2016, when I became a permanent resident of the USA (self sponsored EB-1 green-card). And it took me a few years after that to save up and work up the courage to take the leap. By the beginning of 2019 I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted to build, and by July I felt like it was as good a time as ever to quit my job as a Senior Software Engineer at Squarespace and get started on VSUAL!

Hey. Would you mind sharing what criteria you used to satisfy the EB-1 requirement?. Thanks!

About

I built VSUAL because I was frustrated with the existing POD marketplaces out there. Unlike other services, we are focused on selling beautiful, museum grade art prints.
