Web Microphone

Turn any device into a wireless microphone

July 1, 2020 Launched on Indie Hackers!

Since the MVP, Web Mic received a fresh coat of paint with a Neumorphic UI, a more mobile-friendly layout, and a bunch of small improvements that make it usable for the general public. At this point, it feels right to share it with a broader audience.

The main issue might be the pairing process which trades security for convenience (the app looks for any available receivers without authenticating) but I really wanted it to be very simple and "magical".

The source code for the app is also available on GitHub!

May 23, 2020 Finished MVP

The first version, with a very crude UI and lots of bugs, showed that it was in fact possible! I did a whole live stream about 6 hours in total with zero issues and perfect audio quality! Latency was constant and there were no interruptions.

May 22, 2020 Came up with the idea

When recording a live stream, I needed a wireless microphone but all I had was an old Android phone and a wired lavalier microphone. After trying many tools for streaming audio (RTMP, different VoIP and dedicated apps) I had to choose between:

  • low latency: RTMP doesn't guarantee even constant latency
  • high quality: all VoIP apps were sacrificing audio quality to save bandwidth

This made me think that it should be possible to use WebRTC and IPFS to create a decentralized app just sends audio from one device to another.

About

Sending audio from one device to another (in live streams for example) with low latency and high quality is hard to achieve using existing tools. This is why I built Web Mic. Works everywhere, no installation required.
