May 3, 2022 Weekend Club is dead. Long live Ramen Club 🍜

Some news: Weekend Club is dead. We're now https://ramenclub.so.

The community, content & tools supporting founders to ramen profitable, and beyond.

Since we ran Saturday IRL co-working sessions for founders back in 2019, our community has evolved considerably.

Many of our early members (many of who I met through local Indie Hackers meetups) have gone on to build successful internet businesses, like VEED, Tiiny Host, Data Fetcher, Indie Bites and many more. πŸ”₯

And like our members, our service evolved too. From just IRL weekend co-working, we added masterminds, founder AMAs, remote co-working (weekdays & weekends), $50k worth of discounts, an active Slack, the list goes on.

It became clear we'd outgrown the 'Weekend Club' name.

Now, great communities have a coherent purpose - which ties into their brand & visual identity.

From conversations with people in and outside the community - it was clear that many people joined for a core reason... support on their journey to become "ramen profitable, and beyond." ✨ http://paulgraham.com/ramenprofitable.html

As a founder, It's a worthy goal for you starting out. It provides the freedom to be less reliant on a job, savings, family or outside investments.

It's not the end destination, but a critical milestone in achieving freedom and control over your schedule. And it's been very well received by our members, the #RamenGang so far!

So how will we fulfil the vision? Well...

1/ Community πŸ«‚

βœ… Active Slack of 90+ founders at different stages
βœ… Masterminds with 2-3 others for accountability and deeper bonds
βœ… Wednesday/Saturday remote co-working
βœ… IRL Saturday co-working at https://thehalley.co.uk in London (Lisbon soon!)

2/ Content πŸ“–

βœ… Regular deep-dive posts on topics like ramen profitability, market validation, growth tactics and much more.
βœ… Live bi-weekly AMAs with experienced founders like Rosie Sherry, Arvid Kahl & Amar Ghose.
βœ… In-house mentorship with our experienced financial, marketing and validation advisors

3/ Tools πŸ› οΈ

βœ… Community-first product studio (Studio Ramen) building tools for and with our members (with paid gigs). First drop a free 'ramen profitable calculator'.
βœ… Daily shipping streaks in Slack via our in-house tool 'PowerUp' to gamify communities.
βœ… Much more to come!

Not to mention $50k worth of discounts, and our awesome in-house virtual assistant
Lydia Melvin πŸ”₯

I'm particularly excited about Studio Ramen's potential. https://github.com/studioramen. Many communities have discussed making their own product studio, but few have done so yet.

We're looking to create a best practice template for how to operate these - and have some wild ideas on governance structures and how to best incentivise/involve the community. Stay tuned for more here.

Needless to say, but the roadmap's looking spicy πŸ₯΅

A special thanks to all my fellow Ramens aka #RamenGang: our amazing community members and hosts. You know who you all are. Ramen Club is nothing without you all 🍜🍜🍜

This is the most rewarding journey I've been on already, but it still only feels like day 1. I couldn't be more excited for what the next year (or 10) will bring.

If you like what we're doing, here are 3x quick ways you can support us today:

Big love to the whole Indie Hackers community, Courtland/Channing et al - it's changed the direction of mine and many others lives, long may it continue!

With peace, love & MRR,

Charlie

I joined the community a year ago and love the convergence into "Ramen Club." I've met so many amazing founders here who've made it to the pivotal ramen milestone, or who are well on their way. Charlie's brilliant with community building and if you're a bootstrapped founder I highly encourage you to check it out

  2. 2

I've been a part of Ramen Club/Weekend Club since November and it's been a game-changer for bitreach

For example, I met @jmckinven who helped me launch a podcast, @lydiamelvinva who helps me with my blog, and @rdjpalmer who helps me with development challenges.

Ramen Club has given me a team when I was previously a solo indie founder

    1. 2

It's a pleasure to have you in the community dude! We're just getting started.

  3. 2

I'll repost my PH comment here because I think it really sums up how I feel about RC πŸ’―

Being an entrepreneur can be a lonely journey, with friends and family not really understanding some of your struggles.

I’ve always said my Ramen Club friends are like my colleagues for my side projects. They just get it. Got a growth problem I need help with? I’ll put a message in the Slack. Need some specific feedback on product updates? I’ll DM one of my Ramen Club friends. Want to share a very niche, indie SaaS specific meme? You guessed it, it goes in the community.

I’ve met some truly lifelong friends in the community, no less than founder Charlie Ward. What a community, what a founder. From humble beginnings in a pocket of East London, to global remote community. It’s been a pleasure to be a part of it and excited for the future 🍜

    1. 1

Thanks for being such a longtime pillar of the community (and great friend!) James <3

  4. 1

Amazing working sessions. Amazing community. Amazing people. Ramen club all the way.

  5. 1

I see you have supportersβ€”great! Website looks pretty good.

As an outsider looking in, justifying $39 / month or $390 / year is a big jump.

I’ve seen other sites that have productive co-working, sites that have lists of discounts and resources, and sites that promote slack communities.

Of course, the community aspect seems to be the most important part. Often, I’ve seen difficulty in getting to know others online on a personal level. Mentorship is nice too.

Anyway, I’ll probably pass, but best of luck to you!

Site looks great! Weekend Club was an awesome name, but so is Ramen Club. Cool stuff man

November 8, 2021 We relaunched IRL events!

In March 2020, our Weekend Club community pivoted from IRL to remote as the world was shaken by a global pandemic.

This Saturday 13th November, we're delighted to bring back in-person weekend founder co-working events at thehalley.co.uk, a beautiful space in Haggerston, London.

You can book your ticket here: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/weekendclub/599518

Or subscribe here: weekendclub.co

Feedback from our recent test session:

"Got lots done. Super friendly vibe. Good tunes."

"Great conversations with people who are deep on niche topics"

"Good vibes. Cliche but the community is comprised of awesome people"

And 81% of the attendees had a 'great' experience, according to our survey!

"What the smartest people do on the weekend is what everyone else will do during the week in ten years." - Chris Dixon (a16z)

Millions of amazing creators build in solitude every weekend.

We're going to bring them together and make building side projects 10x more fun and productive.

Let's do this!

March 2, 2021 We launched Weekend Club on Product Hunt today ✌️

Weekend Club is the weekend co-working club for bootstrappers, and we just launched on Product Hunt. I'd love your support!

https://www.producthunt.com/posts/weekend-club-2

We started out in a co-working space in October 2019, then when COVID hit pivoted to remote. Since then we've welcomed bootstrappers from around the world, opened Americas and GMT time zones, tripled our MRR and seen some incredible projects dropped by our members.

I may be biased, but think we're one of the most supportive little communities on the internet. Show us some love Indie Hackers ❀️️

PS - we're currently offering 30 days free trials for those interested. Use code PRODUCTHUNT at sign-up on weekendclub.co for 50% off your first month.

January 25, 2021 Weekend Club launched in Americas time zones πŸ™

weekendclub.co is the weekend co-working club for bootstrappers.

Until recently, we ran weekly, Saturday co-working sessions 10am-5pm on GMT (UK time) only, meaning only people in Europe and Africa would generally join (although we did have members in the USA and Australia too!).

Since 9th January, we've also been running sessions 10am-5pm US Central time, which has opened us up to a bunch of awesome new members. People had been pestering me to do this for a while, so I'm glad it's finally up and running.

I feel strongly that building things on weekends (especially important for people who still have day jobs) should be less lonely, and more fun and accountable. That's why someday I want Weekend Club to be available to every time zone on the planet. So whether you're in India, Vietnam or Australia, there will be a session at a convenient local time, every Saturday.

When we started out in London co-working spaces back in October 2019, I never envisioned we'd be welcoming new Weekenders from places as far away as Brisbane, Santa Barbara and Connecticut. It's been a privilege to build and be a part of this community every day, and I can't wait to launch the next time zone session, and the one after that.

Any questions, just let me know in the comments :)

December 11, 2020 Weekend Club hit $1k MRR πŸš€

Just over 1 year since we launched, weekendclub.co has now broken $1,000 Monthly Recurring Revenue. $1,104 to be precise!

Weekend Club is the weekend co-working community for bootstrappers.

It’s been quite a journey, starting as a twice monthly meet-up at a co-working space in east London. A lot of things have changed in the community since:

  • We pivoted remote (using Slack and Zoom)
  • 50 members strong from around the world, (USA, UK, Malta, Greece, Australia and beyond).
  • Added 100+ software deals (e.g. Stripe, Airtable, Bubble)
  • We saw a bunch of great new businesses and products launch (Remake, Talk To Stefan, ContentUK, Mugshot Bot, Catchup, Embarque, WhatFeatures, Tiiny Host, Indie Bites pod, Woolfie, Timo, Data Fetcher, VEED API, Simple Decisions to name a few)

Thanks to all our amazing members old and new. The community is literally nothing without you, and I couldn't be more happy to be on this journey together. We're just at the beginning πŸ™

    What a year it's been!

Weekend Club has been fundamental to my business... Without it I wouldn't be where I am.

Strongly encourage any side hustlers, indie hackers or whatever you want to call yourselves to join and experience one of the greatest communities for founders.

Weekend Club's Slack community has one of the most supportive that I've been part of with a strong spirit of paying it forward.

  12. 2

Oh nice, didn't realise it was in east london - where abouts? I'd actually be super interested in joining if that was still the case? (obviously not at the moment given lockdown)

    1. 2

I should've been clearer - we started in an east London co-working space back in 2019, but pivoted remote after COVID. A place called Ministry of Startups which is unfortunately not with us anymore.

However - I do have plans to restart having real life Weekend Club sessions again in 2021, happy to reach out when that happens?

  13. 2

Congrats, Charlie. Great milestone to hit!

September 2, 2020 Weekend Club hit $750+ MRR πŸ“ˆ

11 months in, Weekend Club (weekendclub.co) is now on $777 MRR. We're a bootstrapper support network and accountability community built around remote, Saturday co-working sessions.

I'm delighted at how this community is maturing. It started out from friends I made running the IndieBeers meetups in London. People started asking me for a weekend co-working club with other bootstrappers, which we did in physical spaces. Then after COVID hit, we went remote. And here we are!

The main channels for growth were:

  • building a newsletter/Twitter audience first through IndieBeers (which was later merged with indieldn.com)
  • members inviting their friends
  • the Indie Hackers site itself of course

That was enough to get to this stage, but for continued growth I'll need new channels. Now that churn has been at 0% for over 3 months, I'm ready to make this my next big project.

I'll share my learnings as I go.

Oh yeah, and if you want a limited, free 30 day trial, you can sign-up on weekendclub.co :)

I've been a member of Weekend Club from the start, from the idea at Indie Beers, to our sessions in Whitechapel to now weekly remote sessions. I've even been lucky enough to help host some of the sessions with our fantastic members.

You really do get a sense of community within Weekend Club, which is hard to do. I know every member and speak to a lot of them on a weekly, if not daily basis.

Amazing work Charlie - keep it going!

    1. 1

Thanks so much man, love your support and having you in the community / as fellow host. ✌️

  2. 3

I remember joining ths first weekend club and feeling like there was a gap for people like myself to team up with other smart indie hackers and stay accountable on the things we are working on.

Charlie has also "built-in" public and it's pretty open how the community has grown and well documented online.

It still feels very personal. Keep up the great work Charlie

    1. 1

@jayyoms thanks for being an awesome member, since the early IndieBeers days!

  3. 3

Well deserved Charlie! I absolutely love being a part of Weekend Club. It's a special place you're building 😊. There's a rare mix of both practical and emotional support for fellow members from the community.

    Keep it up!

Hey Barrell - just saw this comment and thanks for joining since!

It's a good idea - let me think about it....

  5. 2

Looks like an awesome community. I run Parent’s Club, and I’m curious how you landed on a 21 day trial? Also, any thoughts on credit card required vs no credit card required?

Today, I have a 7-day trial (full access) with credit card required.

    Vincent

    1. 1

Thanks! Honestly the debate of free trial w/ cc, free trial no cc or $ up front with a money-back guarantee goes back and forth, but the only way to know for sure is to test them out for your particular business.

For a while we asked for money up front with a money-back guarantee, and nobody signed up. After introducing a 30 day free trial, sign-ups (and conversions) went through the roof. However this might not work for another type of product/community.

We started with 30 days, but after talking to some members who converted, they said they knew within 2 weeks or so whether they'd sign up or not. So I thought it was possible to reduce to 3 weeks. That's it really!

      1. 2

Thanks, Charlie - this gives me a lot to think about. Something that has worked well for me is $3/month for 3 months, then $9.95 afterward. This gives members a much longer period of time to decide whether to stay long-term.

  6. 2

    That's awesome! Congrats!

  7. 2

Man, this really resonates with me. I should totally join this thing!

  1. 5

Did I get it right ? A member pays 29 Gbp / month and gets 5000 usd in AWS credit ? What’s the catch ?

    1. 1

They get all of these offers included in the price of the subscription, not just the AWS credits:

      https://www.joinsecret.com/offers

No catch, Secret's business model is to offer software-bundles-as-a-service to communities/companies like Weekend Club. So I pay them for my members to get access to the exclusive discounts, which helps with my retention/conversion.

This is new for me, so I'm going to see how it goes. If people just join for 1 month (after the 30 day free trial) for the discounts then leave, I'll adapt it so it's more like 3 months.

  2. 2

Great idea for the two of you to team up!

  3. 2

    Man, so many freebies! 😍πŸ”₯

  4. 2

Nice...do people get all the offers that JoinSecret offers?

    1. 1

Yup, everything on there's included :D

  5. 1

How does this work, do you need to pay 29 GBP on behalf of each person who signs up for a benefit, or you just pay 29 GBP and it's available to all your subscribers? Curious about this!

    1. 1

I'd rather not divulge how much I pay Secret, but I will say that it's worthwhile to improve retention and conversion from free trial to paid.

I'm going to monitor things though. If I see a bunch of people signing up for 1 month to get some discounts then leave, I'll make it more like 3 months+

      1. 1

No problem, just wondering exactly how the model works! Curious to hear how it works out for you :)

        1. 1

For a little more detail, I pay Secret for each of my members who signs up to them, after which they can access all deals.

So I don't give people access while on a 30 day free trial, it's only after they pay for their first month that they can get a Secret account, to incentivise conversion to paid.

I imagine in a few months it'll be structured a little differently, and will share my findings on here :D

          1. 2

Very cool, makes sense. Looking forward to hear your update in a few months :) Thanks for the explanation.

  6. 1

    How much does it cost?

    1. 1

£29 per month, and we do a 30 day free trial. 😊

May 11, 2020 Pivoted Weekend Club to fully remote πŸ‘€

Weekend Club (weekendclub.co) was an IRL Saturday meetup for Indie Hackers to work on their projects together, and things were going great. Then COVID-19 hit.

I had two options. Roll over and die, or figure things out. As you've probably guessed, I chose the latter.

Here's what I've done so far:

πŸ“‰ Lowered prices for existing members.
🧠 Changed our positioning ('Work IRL with other Indie Hackers' ->>> 'The #1 accountability community for Indie Hackers & solo entrepreneurs.'
πŸ”₯ Went from every 2 weeks to weekly sessions (if we go back to IRL, this might return to every 2 weeks).
☁️ Revised the format to be fully focused on Zoom and Slack (runs 10am-6pm BST on Saturdays).
🀼 Added 'productivity buddies' - each member is randomly matched with another member for a 1:1 video call to hold each other accountable.
πŸ–‹ Revised the landing page with testimonials, new headlines and social proof (showing some of our member projects) - thanks for the help Olly (from RoastMyLandingPage.com).
🀯 Added deals. You can now get 50% off VanillaSocial.co and striqopodcast.com/launch

The results so far:

πŸ“ˆ Net increase of 7 subscribers (44% increase, from 16-23).
πŸ“‰ Slight decrease in MRR from $500 -> $488 due to lowering prices. However if some free trials convert, it should be just under $600.
❓ Landing page conversion rate seems higher, but too early to tell. I'll update you :D

Overall, I'm happy with the progress, but much more to do.

The next steps are to optimise the landing page better for mobile, improve our onboarding process, and adapt the customer experience so people feel even more accountability.

Want to sign-up? Go here πŸ‘‰ weekendclub.co πŸ‘ˆ

What tools are you using to keep everyone in sync? I think I will join it!

Great - I just saw you sign up Esteban. Will drop you an email now.

We use Slack and Zoom to keep ourselves in sync. Occasionally Remo.co too.
