February 22, 2023 How my app got featured on the App Store

About a year ago, I was given some advice for getting featured on the App Store. "Use brand new Apple API's".

So during the Apple Developer Conference 2022 I watched carefully for any interesting API's that I could use in my new app. When they announced the new Live Text API I already knew that was a winner.

Live Text is the feature that runs text recognition on your photos, allowing you to copy and paste. Within 5 minutes I had imagined the basic idea behind Whiteout. Using the new API, users can select text within their photos, and then easily annotate that text (Redact, highlight, blur, underline etc.) The result was a cleaner, and simpler way to markup your text.

Fast forward to today; Whiteout has been on the App Store for about 4 months. It has hit over $1000 per month in revenue, and almost $200 MRR.

Last week I got the email from Appfigures that my app has been featured on the App Store. It is in the list "Best New Apps". Since getting featured, my app has gotten almost 500k impressions, and my downloads have went up by 10x.

So in conclusion, I believe that my friend was correct. Building with brand new Apple API's can help get you featured.

Congrats. I am interested in live text API - from a mobile capture to transaction. Like MYOBcapture but from unstructured data that the new live text api can handle.

Is there a place where you can find out who is working on new apple APIs. I am trying to find out if anyone else is working in this space.

During WWDC 2022, Apple introduced the "Live Text" API for 3rd party developers. Knowing that Apple like's to feature devs who use their new API's, I got to work. A few months later and my app was featured by Apple!
