Windfall
For sole traders - keep what you earn
If you’ve ever done a year of contracting and had that sinking feeling at tax time — the one where you know you probably missed stuff, but reconstructing twelve months of “was this allowable?” feels impossible — you’ll get why I built this.
I’m Mark, in London. I spent a long time building products for other people, and a good stretch of that as a contractor. My expenses weren’t a disaster. They were quietly wrong. I’d claim the easy ones, leave the fuzzy ones in a pile, and then my accountant would mention something I’d been entitled to claim for years. Every time, I’d do the maths in my head and feel a bit sick about what I’d paid over for nothing.
The annoying part is the clarity never stuck. Someone explains it, it makes perfect sense, and by the next purchase you’re guessing again.
Most expense apps don’t help with that. They’re built for logging now and deciding later. Later never comes. And HMRC guidance isn’t exactly written for you standing at a till trying to work out if a desk counts.
Windfall is what I wanted back then. You take a photo when the receipt is still in your hand. It classifies the expense for your kind of work, shows the HMRC reasoning in plain English, and you confirm. The dashboard bit I care about is basically: here’s what you kept.
It’s aimed at UK sole traders — freelancers, consultants, contractors doing their own self-assessment.
I’ve put aside 50 founding spots at £39 a year (locked in; it’ll be £59 later). Try it for 30 days. If it doesn’t help you spot at least one category you weren’t claiming, email me and I’ll refund you. No dance.

Curious, for people who’ve sold tools to freelancers: before you had reviews, what actually made the first few people trust you?
About
As a contractor I kept under-claiming the fuzzy expenses. Windfall is what I wanted then: classify the receipt when it happens, with plain HMRC reasoning.
