July 14, 2026 After 10 years running a WordPress agency, here's what actually kept clients coming back

When we started WooNinjas, we assumed clients would stay because of our code quality. Ten years later, I can tell you that's only half true.

The market we walked into was rough. Most business owners running WordPress, WooCommerce, or LearnDash sites had the same story: they'd either been overcharged by an agency, or burned by a freelancer who took the deposit and vanished. By the time they found us, they weren't looking for "the best developer", they were looking for someone who'd still be there in six months.

That reframed how we built the business. We stopped optimizing purely for shipping features and started optimizing for reliability: clear communication, hitting deadlines, and not disappearing the moment a project wrapped. We built a hand-picked, vetted team instead of scaling headcount fast, and we niched down hard into WordPress e-commerce, e-learning, and membership sites instead of taking every job.

The numbers that came out of that surprised me. Over the years it's been 700+ sites built and 85+ plugins shipped, but the one I actually care about is a 76% repeat-client rate. In a services business, that's the real scoreboard. It means people trusted us enough to come back instead of rolling the dice on someone new.

The lesson I'd pass on to anyone running a service or agency: your technical skill gets you the first project. Being dependable is what gets you the next ten.

Happy to answer anything about running a bootstrapped dev agency, niching down, or building recurring trust in a services business. (And if you're on WordPress/LearnDash and something's broken, that's literally what we do: https://wooninjas.com)

The repeat-client rate is the number that stood out to me too. It suggests clients weren't just buying WordPress expertise—they were reducing the risk of having to find another agency. That's a very different value proposition than technical capability alone.
