November 28, 2019 Initial app launched on Google Play

Built a basic app in React Native for both platforms. This is a starting point and I will be adding many more features to it in the coming weeks.

For now, I have it published for Android. I am awaiting the business requirement of having a DUNS number to publish it on the Apple App Store.

October 14, 2019 Launched MVP

I launched an initial version of the site. I worked over a wekeend and built the MVP using Elixir and Phoenix LiveView.

The initial version is super simple and I'm trying to get a feel for how people use it. Based on my own experience and some landing page experiments, I can see there are many people looking for a simple time tracking solution. Freelancers and attorneys seem to be among the top people searching for a product like this.

In my next step, I'm planning to refactor the code out so the API is totally separate from the frontend. I will then build separate web, mobile, and desktop version of the product. At this point, I'm also planning to open-source it for people who want a self-hosted option. I do plan to keep the current functionality free forever.

August 1, 2019 Came up with the idea

I have personally worked as a freelancer for a few years of my career and I have a close family member who is an attorney. When I was doing my work, I always kept track of my client hours manually and noticed others doing the same.

I looked online for time tracking tools and realized there are a bunch out there, but none of them really satisfied me. Some were too bloated (i.e. slow!) and others were too limited. I thought it would be a fun side project to create a lightweight tool to scratch this itch. One product I really love is BitWarden - it's in a crowded market of other password managers, but hits the sweetspot by being lightweight, easy, fast, cross-platform, and open source. My goal is to go for this same sweet spot in market for freelancer tools.

About

As a freelancer, I wanted a fast, free, simple tool for time tracking. I plan to add more features (ex., invoicing, scheduling) but never at the expense of a slow site. Eventually, I want to refactor and open-source it.
