March 29, 2021 After 3 years, open sourced wowmate

My first commit was Jul 14, 2018 and I'm now close to finishing my core functionality. So I figured it was a good time to clean up the repo and open source it.

It was a pretty long road, most of the time I spent learning vue, go, aws and figuring out how I could solve my problem in a cost effective manner.

wowmate will be an B2C freemium SaaS for world of warcraft players

April 16, 2020 100% Infrastructure as Code

I'm building a website for world of warcraft players if you want to read more, check this https://jonny-rimek.com/posts/wowmate.html

I'm building my app fully serverless. I started out with AWS SAM and switched to CDK when it became GA mid of last year. I always had some minor problems that prevented me from having all my infrastructure as code. I took a week to refactor my infrastructure and solve the remaining problems (Athena table creation and SSL certificates)

This will allow me to create a separate staging infrastructure I can deploy to during development, so I don't break my production environment while developing.

My first commit was in July 2018, almost 2 years ago. Why did I take so long? I learned all the technologies involved from scratch (golang, vue/nuxt, AWS/serverless). I also have periods of time where I can't find the energy to work on it for multiple months at a time. I hope to launch a usable version in the beginning of June.

My next steps are redoing my frontend Proof of Concept in Nuxt and implement my staging area + CI

Yes local development was a huge pain, there are solutions(I didn't use any of them) for simple API GW, Lambda and DynamoDB setup, but I had a complex Stepfunction that was really annoying to develop.

I realized that I can't make DynamoDB work for my Application and switched to RDS Postgres, at the same time I decided to drop APIGW+Lambda in favor of Fargate, in part for a better local development. (yes I looked into RDS Proxy, but decided against it)

I never worked with the serverless framework, so I don't know how much better it is and I'm not going to switch things up again anyway^^
