WP Geeks

WordPress plugins and support

August 13, 2018 First paying customer

I signed up our first paying customer a few days ago and completed the work yesterday. It was a theme installation that I charged $49 for. The lead came through the Adwords campaign that I setup a few days ago.

I learned a lot through the process.

  1. The value of just getting something out there. It didn't cost me anything to setup the ad campaign with a free voucher and start testing the waters. Hey, I even made 49 bucks.

  2. Having something out there helps shape what you want to do/build. I'm still not 100% clear on what WP Geeks is/offers and what the future looks like, but I quickly learned that WordPress services and support is not something that I'm passionate about. I'll be pivoting and most likely removing services from the site soon.

Next up is launching a paid WP plugin and seeing where that goes.

August 8, 2018 Facebook ad campaign

I've also started a Facebook ad campaign to generate leads. Right now the campaign is very scattered and broadly targeted. This weekend I plan to select a niche sub-set of people who would be interested in our services (i.e. lifestyle bloggers) and target a campaign directly at them.

August 8, 2018 First lead through our services page

After feeling quite directionless and frustrated, I decided to "just do something" to gain some forward momentum. And so I setup a landing page for "services" on our website and started a Google ad campaign using a free voucher. So far, I've used about half of the voucher and 3 leads have filled out the contact form. Only 1 of the 3 leads appear to be genuine buyers.

August 1, 2018 Official (re)launch

Over the years, WP Geeks has been many different things to our visitors and customers. We've been a small WordPress agency, a WordPress blog, a landing page (for far too long) and a WordPress integration service.

On the 1st of August 2018, I rebranded and launched WP Geeks as a plugin development and WordPress support service. It now has my full attention as my only side project (I still work at a large WordPress agency full time but cut off all other side projects) and my hope is to grow it slowly over time.

The plan over the next few months is to get clearer on our offering and start a monthly support service. Also launch a number of free and premium WordPress plugins.

Let's go! :)
