WriteSmith AI
42 free AI writing tools for students, job seekers, business
I run a small recruitment firm in South London. Every day I see CVs that get rejected by ATS systems before a human ever reads them. Candidates write 'managed projects' when the job description says 'project management.' That one keyword mismatch costs them the interview.
I also have school-age kids. My son starts grammar school in September. The amount parents spend on tutoring and exam prep tools is staggering. Fifty pounds an hour for someone to mark practice essays. Fourteen pounds a month for a tool that paraphrases text.
So I started building. Nights and weekends, using Claude Code as my primary build tool. No engineering team. No funding. Just me, AI-assisted coding, and a lot of coffee.
Four months later, WriteSmith AI has 42 tools. All free. No signup needed. British English throughout.
The tools I am most proud of:
Grade My Answer. You photograph your child's handwritten essay with your phone, upload it, and the AI marks it against AQA, Edexcel, OCR, or WJEC exam board criteria in 30 seconds. Shows the predicted grade, per-criterion breakdown, and exactly what to improve. Parents are using it for 11+ entrance exam preparation.
Job Application Pack. Paste one job description and your CV. Get back a tailored CV with matched keywords, a cover letter for that specific role, five interview questions with STAR method answers, five questions to ask the interviewer, a company brief, and LinkedIn profile tweaks. Six outputs from one input.
Grammar Checker. Most checkers fix the comma and move on. Ours shows two things: the minimum correction and a 'better version' showing how a strong writer would rephrase the entire sentence. You actually learn to write better, not just fix errors.
AI Humaniser. Not a word-swapper. Uses persona-based rewriting to match your text to a specific writing voice. A GCSE student writes differently from a PhD candidate. The humaniser knows the difference.
I also built a Chrome Extension that works directly on LinkedIn, Gmail, Google Docs, and job boards. It detects which site you are on and shows the relevant tools. On Indeed, one click captures the job description and builds the full application pack.
The whole thing runs on Next.js, Supabase, Stripe, and Anthropic's API. Hosted on Vercel. Total infrastructure cost is under twenty pounds a month.
Revenue model: freemium. Free tier gives you three tool uses per day. Paid plans start at £5.99 per month for students. There is also a Founding Member deal at £79.99 for lifetime access to everything, including every tool we build in the future. One thousand spots.
I am not pretending this will compete with Grammarly's thirteen billion dollar valuation. But I genuinely believe students should not need to pay fourteen pounds a month to polish an essay, and job seekers should not pay twelve pounds a month for grammar checking while they are between jobs.
If anyone wants to try it: writesmith.ai. No signup, no credit card, no catch.
About
I run a recruitment firm and kept seeing candidates pay £10-15 a month for basic writing tools, or worse, submit generic CVs that got rejected by ATS systems before a human ever read them.
