The experiment: Can a free tool with optional signup convert better than forced onboarding?

Current numbers (week 1):

- 1,200 scans completed

- 73% of users never hit the free limit (10 scans/mo)

- 12 Pro upgrades ($4.99/mo)

The surprise: Most upgrades come from people who used it 3-4 times, not power users. They upgrade because they want to support it, not because they hit limits.

Stack: React, Node, PostgreSQL. Deployed on Render.

Has anyone else tried "generous free tier" vs "forced upgrade"? Curious about your conversion rates.
