June 26, 2026 How I Built Zama Shops, a Pakistani Marketplace with 1M+ Installs Without Venture Capital

Hi everyone, I'm Ayub Khan, Founder and CEO of Zama Shops.

I started Zama Shops in 2020 with a simple idea: create a trusted online marketplace for Pakistan where individuals, small businesses, and brands could easily buy, sell, and grow online.

I didn't come from a wealthy background or have access to Silicon Valley funding. I'm a self-taught entrepreneur with experience in graphic design, technology, and marketplace operations. I learned software development, product design, and business by building things and solving problems along the way.

The early days were difficult. We had limited resources, a small team, and many challenges, including funding constraints and competition from larger companies. But we kept improving the product, listening to users, and focusing on long-term growth.

Over the years, Zama Shops has grown into a multi-platform marketplace serving users across Pakistan and beyond. Today, we have achieved more than 1 million installs across our platforms and continue to expand our ecosystem for buyers, sellers, and brands.

What I've learned as a founder:

• Start before you feel ready.
• Solve real problems, not imaginary ones.
• Keep learning and adapting.
• Build for the long term.
• Persistence matters more than perfection.

We're still at the beginning of our journey. Our mission is to empower entrepreneurs and businesses through technology and build one of Pakistan's leading digital commerce ecosystems.

I'd love to connect with other founders and learn from your experiences. If you've built a startup in an emerging market or bootstrapped a company from the ground up, I'd love to hear your story.

What stood out to me wasn't the install number—it was the emphasis on staying with the problem long enough for the product to mature.

A lot of founder stories focus on the milestone. The years spent iterating with limited resources are usually the part that actually makes the milestone possible.
