Zen Arts
Marketplace for designer wall art
Hey Indie Hackers! 👋
I'm building Zen Arts - a marketplace that connects independent graphic designers with customers looking for unique wall art and posters.
The Problem
Talented designers have limited options to monetize their poster designs:
- Use international platforms (high fees, take 70-80% of revenue)
- Sell manually via Instagram (time-consuming, no automation)
- Give up and keep it as a hobby
There's no platform that truly prioritizes designers and gives them the tools to succeed without manual work.
The Solution: Full Automation
I'm building a platform where designers can focus on creating, not operations.
The Workflow
From design upload to customer delivery, zero manual work required:
1. Upload: Designer drops their file
2. Processing: System automatically generates previews and realistic mockups
3. Review: Quick quality check (maintaining standards)
4. Sale: Customer orders
5. Fulfillment: Automatically generates print-ready files, sends to printer, handles shipping
The designer just uploads and gets paid. That's it.
Why This Matters
Most print-on-demand platforms make designers do the heavy lifting:
- Manually create mockups in Photoshop
- Handle customer service
- Deal with print specifications
- Chase payments
I'm automating all of it. Upload a design, and the system handles everything from mockup generation to print fulfillment.
Current Progress
✅ Done:
- Complete designer onboarding and upload system
- Automatic mockup generation (realistic room scenes, multiple variations)
- Admin review workflow
- Landing pages live
- Multi-language support
🚧 Building Now:
- Automated print-ready file generation for fulfillment
- Payment processing
- Order management system
- Print partner integration
## The Business Model
Simple and designer-friendly:
- Designers keep 70% of each sale
- Platform takes 30% (covers infrastructure, processing, marketing)
- Designers can spend their earnings for promotion of their works (eg. Facebook Ads, Google Ads etc)
- No upfront costs, no monthly fees
- Free to upload and sell
Compare this to:
- Printful: Designers get ~20-30%
- Society6: Designers get ~10-20%
- Redbubble: Designers get ~15-20%
We're giving creators significantly more of their earnings.
Why It Might Work
1. Market Gap: There's strong demand for unique, artistic wall art. Current platforms either focus on cheap mass-market prints or charge premium prices with low designer payouts.
2. Technical Moat: The automated processing pipeline - from design files to mockups to print-ready PDFs - is genuinely complex. It's not easy to replicate.
3. Economics Work: 70/30 split means designers earn more, we still have healthy margins, and customers get fair prices.
What's Next
Launch timeline:
1. Finish print fulfillment automation
2. Onboard first batch of designers
3. Go live with initial catalog
4. Validate the full loop: upload → sale → delivery
5. Iterate based on real orders and feedback
Why I'm Building This
I've seen too many talented creators struggle to monetize their work. Existing platforms take massive cuts and provide minimal tools.
Building the automation is technically challenging, but it solves a real problem: letting designers focus on design while the platform handles everything else.
If it works, designers make more money with less effort. That's worth building.
Building in public - let's see where this goes! 🚀
About
Existing print-on-demand platforms take massive cuts from designers while making them do all the work. I'm building the platform I wish existed - automated, fair, and designer-friendly.
