Launched our Affiliate Program

Today is the official launch of the Zigpoll Affiliate Program! 🎉

We built this program from scratch with one goal in mind: make at as simple to use as possible and give away as much cash as we can. The hope is that we can attract agency (and personal) affiliates who will be motivated to share Zigpoll with all of their clients. To do this we are offering 30% revenue share for any paid plan in perpetuity for as long as that plan exists. So it should really be a no brainer - if you want to use Zigpoll, you should become an affiliate.

To be honest I know that Affiliate programs are tough to get right, so I think there's a lot of learning thats coming up next. We've already gotten 4 signups just from our super basic posting a couple days ago so we are optimistic. But if anyone has done something like this in the past, please share! We will keep the IH community up to date on numbers once it gets going.

Also if anyone's curious about the technical details, we built it from scratch by:

  1. Using Stripe Connect - In order to get an affiliate link you first need to create a Stripe Connect account so we have a way to transfer funds to you.

  2. Use an encoded version of your id to generate your affiliate link.

  3. Use cookies to save that ID for 30 days if it gets clicked. If a user creates an account w/ that cookie saved, you get added as the referrer.

  4. Set up a CRON to pay out on the 28th of each month to any users who have referred an account that is on a paid plan. This is pretty simple with some database queries and then stripe's transfer API.

Thanks for checking it out :)

Well done on your product - looks great and definitely something that could add value to a site :)

Likewise, I'd be very interested to know how you're affiliate program works out. I'm thinking of starting one but as it's a lot of work, I'm trying to figure out if its worth the effort.

I like also the way you're up front and clear about your affiliate commision. 30% revenue share for any paid plan is generous.

Do you use a third party to track/run your affiliate or did you build everything yourself?

Thanks! I'm glad you like the product :) If you ever have any ideas or feedback let me know: [email protected]

I built it out myself - it took about a week from start to finish (the dashboard is still a little barebones though). Hopefully it's worth it, though I'm getting the feeling it's like anything else where building it is the easy part and getting the word out is trickier. I'll probably fire off some cold emails next week and see how they convert.

Looks cool, I like the landing page!

We're thinking about doing something similar, what happens if multiple people share an affiliate link with the same person? Who gets the credit? Do they both get a percent?

      Thanks!

So only one cookie gets saved at a time - so if the same person clicks on multiple links, the second link will be the one that counts (since it will overwrite the first one).

      Thanks I appreciate it!

So I looked around and the best I could find was a 30% rev share in perpetuity. I couldn't find anything that gave away more than that and lasted forever. If you have any examples please let me know I'm curious what they do / how they market it.

You're correct about the marginal cost being low, but there's a 20% rev share from Shopify so if you refer a Shopify customer thats 50% rev share which, when you factor in marketing, starts to look unattractive. Also I thought that doing anything much greater than 30% sounded a little bit desperate since it was so much more aggressive than the best plans out there and I don't think I'm at that point yet w/ the startup.

Thanks for your thoughtful response, I really appreciate it!

I see what you mean and understand why it's not totally in line w/ "give away as much cash as I can" to be honest I wrote it first thing in the morning and thought that would be more attention grabbing than literal. I agree w/ you on the numbers aspect - would be curious to see what happens if I switch the numbers around in the future. Hopefully it gets enough traction where that's a possibility!
