Looking for your help and insights!

Hello, indie hackers! My name is Stas, and this is my first post here. πŸ˜ƒπŸŽ‰
I and my brother created an automatic time-tracking app for the mac, which we released three months ago. The feedback from our users has been amazing so far, but we still struggle with getting the app in front of more people.

We are, of course, using all the social media sites to promote it, but it doesn't seem to change much. Do you have thoughts or insights on how or where to promote a mac app?

That is our website πŸ‘‰ https://timepal-app.com
Maybe we should change something there? What do you think?

Thank you in advance for your feedback! πŸ™Œ

Hi Stas - looks like you have some competition to deal with.

Hard to know without more details of what you have tried, some observations:

    • There are no ratings, that would probably help.
    • Timepal appears quite the way down the list when I searched for 'time tracking'. Is there anything you can do to improve this?
    • has anyone written about the app? Can you get it reviewed anywhere?
    • can you do a giveaway in return for some reviews?
    • find out who your competitors are following, and follow them.
    • if your target is freelancers (for example) are you following and engaging with them?

Hello Rosie! I really appreciate your reply!
You are right, we have some big competition to deal with.

      • We are currently working on getting more ratings on the MAS (through offering the app more affordable)
      • True, we do need to improve SEO
      • We've only been featured on design inspiration sites, but I haven't found anyone who is writing reviews "just for the fun of it", and our resources are limited, so we can't really afford to pay people to write those. Maybe you have a tip for me here?

Thank you for your insights and tips!

It's worth looking to see what your competitors are doing as 'marketing', then you can choose to be where they are PLUS also think of different ways to reach out to people in ways that they don't.

    Hi Stas,

Who is the product for? Are you having conversations with those people? Reading through the copy it is not clear who this is for nor why someone would need a time-tracking app.

It may be worthwhile interviewing people who you think would benefit from tracking their time so you understand their needs. This will also help you'll discover gaps that no other time-tracking app is filling. You can also pickup on the word choices your ideal customers use and add them to your website copy.

Here are a couple thoughts on the header copy:

"Automatic and manual time-tracking finally united"
Is this the greatest benefit? Is this the #1 end-goal for customers? Does this describe the #1 thing people get out of the product? Maybe being more direct would help. E.g. For a consultant, getting paid on time may be an issue or providing detailed invoices to their clients may be important.

    "Stressless timekeeping"
Is time tracking stressful or is more of an aggravation? Maybe rather than focusing on what the product is not focus on what it is.

I hope this is of help.

You've raised the exact point that I was also unsure about. Thank you so much for taking a look and investing the time to share your feedback! I really appreciate it!

        No problem. Cheers!

Hi Stas β€”Β site and app look really good.

As the other poster mentioned, this space is incredibly competitive. I know the space pretty well, and yet I don't think I've seen the rules-based time tracking thing.

It looks like a very smart idea, with a lot of interesting possibilities, including some to get you more users (e.g. integration with widely used project management software like Asana).

As far as traffic sources, I wouldn't bet on social media for a B2B product like this. I would probably start with the usual things like SEO (reverse engineer traffic sources for competitors), especially B2B software review websites.

Thank you for the kind words! True, we need to invest some time into improving our SEO.

And yes, we have plans to integrate with other tools, especially PM ones).
