3-step email sequence for a successful Product Hunt launch

When you're launching on Product Hunt, don’t make the mistake of sending emails on your launch day.

You need to warm up your subscribers about your launch at least a week before. This will help you get more support and rank higher on Product Hunt.

Use this tested, 3-email sequence for your Product Hunt launch:

Email 1: We are launching on product hunt (7 days before launch)

When you finalise your launch day, create a coming soon page on Product Hunt and send a mail to your subscribers list.

What you can discuss in the mail:

  1. What is Product Hunt
  2. How your launch will help you grow your startup and improve your product
  3. And ask them to create Product Hunt accounts to support your launch.

Product Hunt doesn’t value upvotes from new users on Product Hunt (and might consider it to be low-quality), so it’s better if your subscribers create an account on PH atleast a week before your launch.

Email 2: Follow up mail for the announcement post (3 days before launch)

When there's 3 days left for launch, send a follow up mail to your subscriber list, in which you can share these:

  1. Ask them whether they have created a PH account and remind them to create one if they haven’t
  2. Share how your launch preparations are going and product updates
  3. Ask them feedback on your launch content

Email 3: Launch day mail

Mail your subscribers asking for support once your launch is live, in which you can share these:

  1. Tell them how helpful their support will be for your launch
  2. Ask them to review your product on the product page
  3. Mention the launch offer, if you are running any

Tip: If you use a email marketing software like Convertkit or Mailerlite, it is better to batch your subscribers based on the locations and schedule a launch mail according to their time zone.

This will help you

  1. To get a better open rate and
  2. To spread your support through out the day

PS: If you don't have time to write these mails from scratch and looking for inspiration, we created 3 emails templates that you can copy and use for your Product Hunt launch straight away. Click here to get the email templates for free

Next question is: how can you build a community of early supporters?

    1. 1

To build audience for your launch, I would recommend

      1. Create a waitlist for your product
      2. Build in public on twitter & linkedin (if you are audience are there on twitter and linkedin) and plug the waitlist page
      3. Find communities where your audience hangs out, talk to them and plug your waitlist page if it is relevant

Also, We made a list of 125 pre launch, launch, and post launch tasks that helps you to build audience, get support on the launch day, and rank higher on product hunt. You can check it out here: https://launchpedia.co/product-hunt-workbook/

for us, the launch on Appsumo created a big audience of super-devoted users who constantly share feedback with us. But I would say that Appsumo is not the platform for every business, but for those with low tiers mostly

I Felt, this going to help me with the product launch of the hiring software on which my team has been working. It gave me a new concept on how to build awareness as well.

    Very insightful sharing! Thanks.

Any recommended tool to gather emails from Stripe customers or users stored in mongdb?

  17. 1

Hey, this is awesome! I'm actually working on something in this space, do you have any real examples of these sequences?

  18. 1

Thanks for the details sequence flow. WE are launching on coming Monday this will help us to plan the things

I thought about doing something similar, but thought it was just too much to ask for people who subscribed to receive news about the launch of my product.

Don't you think this could have the opposite effect and push people to unsubscribe from your mailing list?

If I receive a sequence like, I knew I would instantly unsubscribe. I'm ok to receive your email when you launch your product or when you push new features, but I don't want to be "spammed" to upvote your product on PH.

    What do you think?

    1. 1

If you’re too promotional and pushy in your content, the unsubscribes will be more. But if you tell how this launch will help your product and how their small help will help you grow your startup. Then your subscribers would be happy to support you.

      1. 1

        Yes, that makes sense.

  20. 1

Noted for future reference ✍️ thank you.
I still need to build a list of subscribers.

  21. 1

I'm considering starting on Product Hunt. It looks like having seed users and early traffic is crucial before launching. I'm still figuring out the approach. Thanks for sharing—your insights answered some of my questions. Awesome sharing!

    1. 1

Yeah, it's better to have audience before the launch. This increases our chances of ranking higher on Product Hunt.

    That's very helpful, big thanks!

I always thought of PH as a way to get first eyes on my product. But reading this post and a couple of others made me realize that I need a community behind my product prior to launch. But then what's the point of launching there? Can you even grow your customer base this way?

Fellow indie hackers, what do you think?
