30K users in 1 month.

#30k+, that's a lot, right?

So yeah, now Colors & Fonts has hit such a number.

The most curious is that I haven't used a penny on advertising the site.

Since the very beginning, when it looked like crap, and did not even know what IH's was I have been linking to it when users were talking about colours or typography on FB, if someone asked for help, and so on. Just get yourself in the middle of the conversation, don't hesitate.

The biggest influx of users was from the post on Reddit that was on the front page, bringing in 7k+ users in one day and 3k+ users the next.

Before that, the site was getting around 200 -300 after that the site stabilized with 500 - 600 more or less and it kept growing.

Then around a week ago, the site was featured on sidebar.io, Gary Simon youtube channel Coursetro, Code Drops newsletter ( not public ), even a Reddit user posted it.

And it keeps going on on Twitter, lots are posting it just because.

Have a great day and thank you for reading.

                      Nice ! Just answered.

        2. 1

What made you do a VPN app when there are thousands or millions out there? What differentiates you from the rest of the market? So far, I cannot see it on the landing page.

          1. 2

            Hi ajimix,

I don't want to make this thread about our VPN so please feel free to PM me. All of the information can be found at https://www.oeck.com/features/

What do you think of Michael's site? Pretty great, isn't it?

            Regards,
            Peter @ Oeck.

    Nice! Congrats Mike!

    1. 1

      Hey Marko, thank you!

  3. 2

Your front page looks amazing! Do you mind to ask you, how did you animate the DIV where users sign up for your newsletter? Looks really cool!

  4. 2

Amazing Job Mike, love the site. I will be using it a lot. Just a note, I went to signup to the mailing list and the response I got was 'sign out'. It seems like it signed me up so it works, just the response is strange.

    1. 1

      Hey Joe!

Thank you so much and thank you for subscribing.

That's Substack behaviour, it will recognize that you are subscribed to my newsletter, so you don't subscribe again. If you open on incognito mode it will display Sign in.

I can't wait until they have a better input,, that's actually an I frame...

It is actually an extraneous response..

  5. 2

Congratulation Michael πŸŽ‰. That's the proof that you can raise without a penny spent. Best wishes with the site as well as the newsletter 🀞

  6. 2

That's an incredible number! Do you want to monetize this eventually?

    1. 1

I am sort of starting to monetize the newsletter with sponsors.
Then I am going to use it to drive traffic to a project I am working on.

      Wickedtemplates.com

  7. 1

Great project! I really hate this part of finding out color patterns and the proper fonts and all. Too much choice. This puts it in one place.

I like how you visualize the fonts in a Web point of view. Definitely interesting to work this out further. For example by clicking on it see how it looks on a standard website. Some tables populated. Maybe just fill in some bootstrap elements so we van see and easily and quickly compare.

    Will defo follow you! πŸ˜„

    1. 1

      Thank you Doc.

Well, It's on the road map. I am going to update the font pairings with real use cases.
And link to sites using them.

Do you think that will help?

You mean bootstrap the css framework? If it is so, thr site is made with Buefy.org.

Bit I got you. Totally agree with you, thank you again !

      I will follow back.

      1. 1

Yeah think that'll help. It always is good to see things like this in use.

That's why I was thinking about bootstrap.
I meant to put the fonts and all in bootstrap elements to showcase. Its just an idea. I think many devs use bootstrap, so seeing elements like tables populated with the fonts could give a good idea to what it'll look like using the fonts.

Simply take all the bootstrap code with examples and build sort of a switcher that loads the fonts when opening the example.

But I'm sure you already have a ton of ideas to work on. It's a really nice idea. Good luck!!

        1. 1

Ok, you mean like happyhues? I had something in mind for the color palettes. I started with it, like toggeling the colors on a fake ui site but added other features.

          Thank you Doc
          Have a great one !

  8. 1

    Congrats on the milestone! πŸŽ‰

I checked out the site, and the UI looks nice, but personally I was very confused. The UX feels a bit too poor for me. I wouldn't personally use it as I don't see the connection between all the tools and each tool indvidiually feels very basic and hard to use (for example you don't see the copied code, when you hover a color it doesn't show the color code, hard to navigate back and forth between sections). What is the use-case of the app? Should I keep it open on one screen and use it as a "swatches" pallete?

    1. 1

      Thank you. !

The UX feels a bit too poor for me.

      Poor in what sense ?

I wouldn't personally use it as I don't see the connection between all the tools.

Why do they need to have a connection within them to use them?
I mean, you can only use one, and they have different purposes.

Each tool indvidiually feels very basic and hard to use (for example you don't see the copied code, when you hover a color it doesn't show the color code

The intention of the tool is not having distractions around, so the animations are almost non existing limited.

When you hover, the color gets darker.

As you have probably seen, there is no ads either.

hard to navigate back and forth between sections

You have a huge button saying menu.

What is the use-case of the app? Should I keep it open on one screen and use it as a "swatches" pallete?

Having it open or not is your choice, those color palettes are a starting point, from there you can adapt it to your project.

      1. 1

        Poor in what sense ?

I did give some examples above. When I take an action usually what happens is not what I expected.

You have a huge button saying menu.

I know how to go back, I can use the back/forward buttons.

What I mean, for example in the "COLOR" section, all the cards look very similar and it's hard to skim over it. There are also conflicting titles like "COLOR PALLETES" and "MATERIAL COLORS". Isn't material colors a color palette itself? The groupping itself is not what I expect.

There are many other such examples, overall I keep asking questions when trying to just browse.

        1. 1

1- Explain me the action. What are you expecting?
3- They have their respective Icon.
2- Color palettes are color palettes, as the name says.
4- Material Colors and Tailwind colors are the colors used in the respective CSS framework.

Ok, I am ready to read all the examples.

          Thank you.

          1. 1

I said before: I hover a color, I expect to see the color code. When something is copied, I expect to know what is copied (for example with the gradients, I don't know if it's CSS only, the browser compatibility, the colors used in that gradient).

The problem with the icons is that they're too small and have a background/border around them, which makes all of them look the same and hard to skim over. For example, just try removing the background of the icons and just keeping the glyphs, it will be much easier to read.

Material Colors and Tailwind colors are the colors used in the respective CSS framework

Yes, which is the color palette used by that framework.
For framework-specific palettes a much better UX would be to have a single color palette page and some tabs/toggles to switch between Tailwind/Material. Now you have to go back and forth between screens has a really big cognitive impact.

Now, each tool individually is really, really hard to use. For example the color converter, I can't even drag the sliders, I don't know what the input has to be, there are no examples, no defaults, no autofocus, no units, if I move the sliders nothing happens.

I think I gave sufficient feedback for now, you could watch people use your app and see how they will have no idea how to use the tools. Ask a UX designer or read more about UX to learn what good usability means. For me it looks like a tool aimed at UI/UX developers , but itself it lacks good UI/UX, so the target audience is actually more likely to not enjoy using the app as they know what they're doing.

I hope I don't sound too harsh, I do think this kind of feedback is the best you can get and you could create a really awesome site if you try to focus more on improving the UX.

What is retention like? How many folks are coming back daily/weekly/monthly?

    1. 1

Well, around 600 and 800 users daily more or less.

I am not using Google analytics anymore, so I can't be exact.

      1. 3

I feel you need to optimise for weekly active users, otherwise it will always be feast and famine.

Retention is important for consumer apps.

        1. 2

Is not a big deal, is a free site.

          1. 1

            Most consumer apps are free?

            1. 1

              Many have a payment option.

I think is a very good number, even weekly, taking into account I haven't put a penny on promoting it.
