Blog on path or subdomain, which is better?
Hey everyone,
What is your opinion on the SEO benefits of running a blog on the same domain under /blog compared to running a blog on a different subdomain like blog.?
I've recently migrated my blog over to the main site for the benefit of a more consistent experience and more control. But does anyone know if this will also improve my ranking for keywords found on the blog?
In terms of SEO, subdir over subdomain any day. Backlinks built to subdir will have a greater impact on the domain as a whole. The impact is greatly reduced if the blog is on subdomain.
I have been doing SEO for close to 10 years.
Edit: if you migrated, make sure you have the appropriate 301 redirects in place to transfer some of the "link juice" to the new URL.
What if the subdomain backlinks generously to the main domain?
Thanks @satyawrat! Yes, I’ve 301 redirects set up and an identical path structure so I’m hoping Google has no trouble with the change.
I read somewhere a while back that subdomains are treated as separate sites and do not share in the SEO strength of the parent domain, so I think it's a good thing you moved the blog to a subfolder
Subfolder every day. Subdomains are treated differently in google's eyes and accrue their own domain authority, separate to the root domain.
Always as a subfolder if it's possible to do it with your tech stack.
That's my thought as well. I'm interested to see if there is a noticeable benefit.

/blog is always better than .blog. Unfortunately, I don't know any out-of-the-box solutions for blogging that offers such a feature.

Yep, just like everyone else mentioned. Google treats subdomains as separate domains so I'd strongly recommend you stick with subfolders.
