Challenge: Pitch your business idea in 10 words for fewer

"What does your business do and why should I use it?" Can you answer that question in 10 words or fewer?

While you're at it, be helpful and comment on someone else's pitch to tell them what you think. 😇

marketingexamples.com — Real world marketing examples

    open to improvements?

    1. 3

Huge fan of your newsletter. I don't think "real world marketing examples" is how I'd describe what you do.

Here's my go at your pitch based on what I like about your newsletter:

3-Minute marketing guides - practical tips for newbies and old hands. Delivered weekly.

Yes, I know there's 12 words here. Not sorry.

Here are some 10 word options:
3-Minute marketing guides for newbies and old hands. Delivered weekly.
      or
Practical marketing guides for newbies and old hands. Delivered weekly.

      Here's the break down:
3-Minute marketing guides --> what it is
practical tips for newbies and old hands --> what sets it apart (or what gives it character).
Delivered weekly. --> How it's done (or when to expect it)

I had a few goes at this. Specifically with the phrase "practical tips for newbies and old hands". I think that phrase is key as it's your opportunity to showcase your USP both in terms of what you say and how you say it. I also think this phrase can be improved!

Earlier attempts on that particular phrase include:
      "without the marketing lingo"
      "without marketing-speak"
"even your non-marketing friend can understand"
"even your new-to-marketing friends can understand"

      1. 2

Damm this is good. Thanks a lot Lesley for such detail. Better than what I had I agree.

Pratical marketing tips for newbies and old hands

Three minute marketing guides also really good. Thank you

    2. 3

There is no other way to put it better. "Real-world marketing examples" is very descriptive

This is great. I love the idea and the design. The tagline sums it up perfectly, and I am already scrolling through the real examples for "Conversion".

      1. 1

        Haha! Nice Yash. Enjoy :)

    5. 1

Straight to the point and hard to misinterpret. I like it!

    6. 1

Solid! I think it does the job great.

The only addition may be something that indicates that it is "for/from companies of all sizes".

    7. 1

Out of this world marketing examples :)

  2. 10

zohunt.com - Effortlessly attract, manage and hire top talent

    1. 2

I like it, the only word that stuck out a little bit was "manage", how do you manage someone you are trying to recruit?

I get that you're talking about managing them thru the hiring process, but just stood out a little.

      1. 2

Thank you Mubs, I have just changed from "manage" to "engage". Since when someone applies to a job opening, the next thing to do is to engage them in conversation such as interviews and things like that.

        1. 1

          Awesome, great update!

    2. 2

Very nice. Could add how, but that might take away the mystery and stop people clicking through to find out!

    3. 1

yeah, i think that's pretty tight!

Versoly - SaaS focused website builder

    1. 2

How about: "Simple, powerful website builder, designed to drive SaaS product conversion"

I like the simplicity of yours, it's just at first impression I thought it was building a "SaaS website"?...

      1. 1

        Website builder for SaaS products?

      2. 1

Thanks for the recommendation, I like yours.

We are simple but powerful at the same time. You can build a site in under 30 minutes, but if you're a developer or want to hire a developer you can and they can build inside of the web app.

I like how you use "conversion", we have had that in previous 10 word descriptions.

Will need to think about this again :)

  4. 5

https://trackmylift.app - The most simplest yet powerful gym workout tracker app

    1. 2

You could shorten this even more to something like “simplest workout tracker ever”

      1. 1

Love that 👏🏻Did you have time to get a look at the website? What you think?

        1. 1

The website is great. It does exactly what it needs to do.

    2. 2

I like it! One grammer thing: it's 'most simple' or 'simplest'

    3. 1

"Simple" + "Powerful" doesn't really resonate (used to be a competitive bodybuilder, haha). Biggest gripe with trackers is speed.

Be the fastest, I'm logging in-between sets afterall!

      1. 1

I am a competitive bodybuilder so it's built with this in mind 👌😊 it is FAST. simple. Very powerful 😊

    4. 1

"most simplest yet powerful" feels like it's doing too much.

Track your gym workouts with ease

    1. 3

Neat idea! How about "Platform that connects street-food lovers with food trucks"?

On the site, instead of "All the best food trucks...online", how about: "Find the best food trucks...online"? Starting with a verb drives action

      1. 1

        Definitely!
I need to revise and change the landing page and couple of other page to show the idea of the platform more clearly to the three type of users I'm targeting.
It should be done in the next couple of weeks :)
I will let the indiehackers know about all my progress!

    2. 1

Nice idea! My French is a bit rusty but I get what the goal of the site is. In your pitch you could maybe highlight the benefit for your users a bit more, like "find nearby food trucks" or something

      1. 1

        yes! definitely!
It is my work in process to write down very specific persona of the different users of LocalChef, and work on the user funnel to lead them to specific actions :)
I now have my ideas pretty clear for the funnels and personnas, only left if couple hours of work on it! :p

    Formito.com — A Form Builder in Chat-like format

    1. 2

      Looks awesome! Congrats!
At first i thought that the builder is chat-style. IMO you could make your pitch even shorter. How about "Create chat-like forms"?

      1. 1

I've got very great pitches here, all better than mine. Thanks for sharing it. I like this one very much. I should make some changes to the landing page and put "Create chat-like forms" in the header. Thanks again for coming up with such a short and descriptive pitch.

    2. 2

Awesome product! I just saw everything for the first time, but my instinct would be more like "no-code chat-style forms"

      1. 1

Wow, "no-code chat-style forms", I like it. I couldn't describe the product in such a short sentence. May I use this sentence for my future pitches or probably in the landing page?

        1. 2

Yeah, of course! Use it wherever. Glad you like it.

    3. 1

      Fill out forms through chat

      1. 1

        I like this one too.

Pod Hunt – The best new podcasts daily

    https://podhunt.app

    1. 3

How about “Discover the best new podcasts daily”?

      1. 1

Thanks, might do some A/B testing with that!

    2. 2

Isn't this focused more on podcast episodes though?

      1. 1

Yeah, but that would be too confusing to plain in just 10 words :)

    1. 4

Hmm, that was quite confusing at first. "Text" isn't enough to make me think "text messages", so my mind went to copy writing or editing. It took me a minute. Maybe "Mailchimp for Text Messages" or "Mailchimp for SMS/Text".

I think that "Text" is a US-centric terminology, as I've usually heard SMS outside of the US. I could be wrong though! Worth checking out what terminology your competitors or others in the industry use.

      1. 1

Thank you for the great feedback, using SMS as the term instead of Text is something I've honestly not even considered before. Definitely something I'll be thinking about moving forward!

  9. 3

travelbro.io: Discover Amazing Travel Destinations, Research and Prepare Your Trips

    1. 2

But why would I use this over all the other options.

      1. 1

Well, thiss one lets you filter travel destinations based on your personal preferences (temperature, distance, visa requirements, required travel vaccinations, ...) and provides everything you need to know for travel preparation conveniently on a single page. Not sure how to communicate all that in 10 words or less. Any suggestions?

        1. 2

None of what you stated is mentioned in the 10 word pitch (nor should it be). I was trying to make a point that based of of your pitch alone, your offering is very similar to a ton of other services.

          1. 1

Agreed. I edited my original comment while you replied. Any suggestions for a better pitch?

            1. 2

Not sure. One feature I’d use, however, is being able to filter locations based on legality of prescribed psychotropic medications. Please look into that.

              1. 1

How about "Discover and Research Travel Destinations Faster Than Ever Before"?

I will look into that. Thanks for the feedback!

                1. 3

IMO the value of what I'm seeing on your site when you click into a destination is preparation or less stress. So something like "Be perfectly prepared for your next trip" or "Zero stress trip planning"

                  1. 1

                    Great suggestions, thanks!

    2. 1

Feels like it's doing too much.

Interviewing is how you get there, for the user, they read/benefit from the stories?

    2. 1

"Interviews with women building profitable businesses" sounds a bit better to me

  12. 3

careermove.io - Learn how people are making successful career moves

    1. 1

      yep also, good i think.

Only thing is "moves" has connotations of "making moves" as in getting promoted. I'm not sure if that's the intention or not?

      1. 1

hahaha. What's the best way I can put it? My intention is to help people start their own profitable business

Marketplace that helps people list, discover, buy home cooked meals.

Still in market validation, no website yet, open to feedback just for the idea!

    1. 1

I'm sort of in the same boat. I've got a marketplace to try but in the stage of validating it.

      1. 1

that's good! it helps to set a time frame for validating, then at one point have to push self to just do it, do something, that's the only way we'll know!

    2. 1

I think longer lasting foods would be good.

I have wanted to make bone broth before but it takes a while and didn't taste great.

The retail price of it is way to expensive if there was a way to get it cheaper I would buy it.

      1. 1

Interesting idea, haven't thought about that.
For bone broth though, I think freezing would work.

        1. 1

Yeah freezing works. However getting it to taste nice and having to cook it for 48 hours + puts me off doing it.

  16. 2

reallysimplestore.com - Sell online, from any website, in minutes.

    1. 2

"from any website" was kind of confusing

    2. 2

Seems pretty vague. Is this for my products or drop shipping? On the landing page maybe show details of how it works along with the 6 step video. Idea seems interesting but I was confused on the landing page.

    2. 1

This is a cool concept, but as a description, that's a little vague. That works as a marketing headline, but to describe the business more specifically, maybe something like "A CRM where you pick and choose features" or "Create your CRM by choosing only the features you need"... which is really the selling point!

      1. 1

    1. 1

i like the concept a lot.

i think the word "360" is a bit "management speaky"
i also think "self serve" is as well. What does that actually mean?

Could just be me, but could this be wrote plainer?
Admittedly it probably helps if there's a landing page to look at alongside

      1. 1

@harrydry I would imagine that the target market is Enterprise, so management-speak is actually beneficial here? Even though I agree that I don't prefer their lingo, using their language is best for getting them to relate.
