Really clean and professional looking, I like it a lot. Is this targeted at dropshippers/wholesalers, people with ecommerce stores, or just everyday consumers? Not questioning the offering, but I'm just curious about your target market.

      1. 1

Thank you @Filmpatico! Originally I had everyday consumers in mind. Though, as I've been testing, it seems the value prop isn't super high to everyday consumers as (a) people tend not to have that many packages out for delivery at one time, and (b) the existing solutions (e.g. checking tracking numbers on multiple sites) isn't that terrible.

So, I have been considering a pivot to target businesses who naturally tend to have a higher volume of deliveries. And specifically, maybe focusing on providing visibility into potential delays in shipments. What do you think?

        1. 2

Ah okay, I got it. Well speaking for myself and only myself, I don't have this problem because almost all of the stuff I buy online is from Amazon and they send regular tracking updates. When I do buy something from another site like Fanatics or eBay for example, they normally have an option to enter in your phone number to get updates through texts.

I don't sell anything online so it's hard for me to speak to the needs of professional sellers, but I'm sure there's some kind of gap there. If you're shipping stuff out through USPS, Amazon FBA, perhaps some parcels through UPS or FedEx, I think it would definitely be useful to see all your stuff in one place. If you haven't already, looking on reddit is always helpful in getting to know the customer. There's tons of subs for ecommerce and entrepreneurs. If nothing comes up when you search for "tracking numbers" or something similar, you could always make a post and just ask! Good luck.

          1. 1

Thanks so much, @Filmpatico! I've started to post on Reddit but good idea to search for subreddits around ecommerce. I appreciate the help!

    ScreenplaySubs

Please make me question my life choices 🙂

    1. 2

Curious about the behind the scenes - do you personally have to go through movies one by one and synch the screenplay line by line? If so, how do you deal with deleted scenes and bits of dialogue that didn't make it to the movie?

I think your landing page is good for what you're offering. I'm a screenwriter (so to speak) and to me it doesn't really matter what it looks like, so long as it works.

      1. 2

        Hi Filmpatico,

Thankfully, I do not manually sync up the screenplays line by line. At least mostly.

TL;DR: ScreenplaySubs fetches the subtitles from Netflix, parse the PDF-formatted screenplays into a JSON, and sync by calculating the sentence similarities between subs and screenplay dialogue.

A lot of the underlying problems presented with each step sounds deceptively simple at first, but turns out to be extremely challenging and fun to research! E.g. There’s basically no resources regarding parsing PDF screenplays beside a handful of research papers, which lead me to create my own open source repo for this.

Currently, I’m treating scenes as atomic, meaning we are able to detect scenes with different ordering between screenplay and movie, but if dialogues are swapped WITHIN a scene, there will be some syncing inconsistencies.

If scenes are deleted from the screenplay, it will be fine. Stay tuned for more demo videos showcasing this. However, I haven’t really tested the case where an entirely new scene that’s not in the screenplay are added to the movie. Partially because I can’t think of a film that does so.

Some scenes do have little to no dialogues, which would pretty much cause the extension to work in a best-effort basis. E.g. the opening scene in There Will Be Blood has very minimal if not no dialogue at all. This is the case where I need to jump in and sync up the screenplay manually. Since it’s still MVP, I haven’t bothered doing this, and hopefully it won’t be a deal breaker for the limited number of movies currently supported. OTOH, the opening scene of Inglourious Basterds is great, since there are tons of dialogues in it 😊.

Would you be interested for me to get into the details? I was thinking of writing a series of technical blog posts prior to the launch.

        1. 1

That's really interesting, and such a good idea. I hope you find a way to get this to work on other streaming platforms. TWBB is my favorite movie of all time and yes I know exactly what you're talking about. If I remember correctly the script has Daniel's mule dropping dead from exhaustion, and the movie doesn't even show a mule. I just read/watched Hereditary (Amazon Prime) and there was a ton of stuff in the script that didn't make it into the movie.

It sounds painstaking, like colorizing an old movie. But I think this would have a relatively large market for film buffs and industry folks. Maybe even some enterprise utility for big studios? Speaking for myself only, I would definitely be interested in a demo or behind the scenes type video that shows the process but it seems a bit superfluous unless a lot of people are clamoring for it.

First off, really cool extension idea. I'll break my feedback down in two parts: the landing page itself and the Chrome web store page.

Landing page (not much to critique, I think it gets the point across really well):

      • I'm not sure what it is, but the main title is a bit difficult for my eyes to focus on. I think it's a combination of the dark background with the drop shadow on the text. It could probably work well just being plain white, but this may just be a "me" problem.
      • I didn't realize the "Growing List of Supported Movies" was clickable at first. Maybe make it a secondary action button (Just an outline or something)?
      • The unordered and ordered lists seem a bit off since there's no marge and they break outside the rest of the content. Might be worth pulling them over to the right a bit.

      Chrome Web Store Page:

      • Put some keywords in your extension title as it helps a lot with organic ranking and traffic on the web store. For example, if you look at the web store homepage, you'll see this a lot (i.e. "1Password X – Password Manager", "Screencastify - Screen Video Recorder", etc). Something like "ScreenplaySubs - Netflix Movies With Screenplay" or something alone those lines could work well. Keep it short but descriptive.
      • Add some extra content to the description. It's one of those things where most people won't read it (and will only look at the screenshots), but it also helps with search ranking within the store, so take advantage of using some keywords here as well.
      • It looks like you don't have promotional images added based on the search result for your extension. It's worth adding all 3 image sizes so your extension is at least eligible to be featured in the store. Plus, it makes your listing a little more visible among search results rather than just displaying your extension icon in a small square (like it is currently).

Hope some of that is helpful!

My housemate had the same problem with the title thing so I feel like removing the shadow. I guess sometimes less is more haha. Agreed with rest of feedback, especially the web store one. A few other people have pointed out to put descriptive title + descriptions and such, and I'm still brainstorming the right words to put. Appreciate the feedback!!!

      Hey Erin!

Firstly, I wanted to say thank you for the feedback!

I really loved the look of your site. Very modern, clean, and easy to navigate.

My only critique is that I don't fully understand what a gilly is? I read the descriptions, but I didn't totally get it. For example, the opening page of your site has this description "Daily, playful treats created by experts, curated for help you & you partner connect, play, love". I think there was a typo? So my first thought is immediate confusion if I am a prospective customer. After mentally correcting the typo, the description still feels vague enough that I'm not picking up on why a gilly would be useful to me.

Perhaps if there was a video explaining its use, closer to the top of the page (if not on the very first page you see), that would help? Or more concise descriptions.

Would love to hear your responding thoughts!

      Coko

First, site aesthetics looks great :) I like the video in the about us.

      Now the roasting / feedback...

      • It took me a while to figure out that your business is helping BIPOC women produce music (at least, that's what I understood from the Services page). My question would be — for brown women, what is it that they can't get from a non-brown studio that they can get from you? I'm sure you know this well but it's not clear from your website other than that it's a safe space (safe how?)

      • What is an audio playground? It sounds like a blog? But then you offer services and are a studio (I think?) Maybe call your blog "the audio playground"?

      • Depending on how early / far along you are, it would help to have testimonials or news about clients you've worked with. Or maybe examples of the work you did with them. Something like a portfolio?

      • It's also not clear who you are. Are you a person? A group? I think if you're making an appeal to a specific group of people, it helps for them to trust / see that you can relate to them. So a small bio about you / the studio would be great to help personalize it.

      Hope this helps!

      1. 1

Erin, thank you for the feedback/roast (LOL!)

        To answer your questions:

        1. I created the site as an answer to the under-representation that women, (specifically women of color), face in the music/entertainment/performing arts industry. Whether Latina, Asian, African American, or African, there's just not enough representation across the racial spectrum, leading to less discovery of these types of music, and a serious effect on the likelihood of success for people of color who are wanting to be musicians (because of that lack of media representation). I guess "safe space" is one of those new-age buzzwords, but I meant for it to sound inviting, for anyone wanting to share their music, without fear of being written off for not being mainstream enough in looks/sound.

I'm hoping that by making this my focus (to genuinely have a platform that brings more viewership to WOC who make music), that I'll be able to convert viewers/readers to look into our services (the studio stuff). Which I think, is where the difference would lie, not in the studio service, but in the potential for increased exposure for their music/artwork.

        1. I have a blog portion of the site, which is pretty much the whole site. I've sort of minimized my services, because I want to present value, before trying to sell the service? Not sure if I'm going about it the right way. I agree that 'audio playground' is sort of confusing/unclear. I'm an early college student & I figured the phrase would sort of appeal to ppl 14-29 yrs. old, in an obscure "artsy" kind of way.. But I think I'm wrong on that. I will consider changing my website name to "the Audio Playground". I think it sounds more aesthetically pleasing than "Brown Girl Sound". I guess w/ the name "Brown Girl Sound" I was quickly trying to get the point across? But I think the name might be a bit polarizing. Do you suggest that I change the website name?

        2. Totally agree on the testimonials!

        3. Agree on the bio... I tried to remain neutral about that, because I didn't want to personalize it, because I don't really feel too comfortable having too much of my identity online, but I can agree that it's unclear whether I'm a person/group.

        1. 2

Ah got it! Some thoughts (of course, you are the expert of your target demographic so take what you think is helpful and throw out what isn't from my feedback):

          1. "This site was created as an answer to the under-representation that women, (specifically women of color), face in the music/entertainment/performing arts industry. Whether Latina, Asian, African American, or African, there's just not enough representation across the racial spectrum, leading to less discovery of these types of music, and a serious effect on the likelihood of success for people of color who are wanting to be musicians (because of that lack of media representation)"

"for anyone wanting to share their music, without fear of being written off for not being mainstream enough in looks/sound."

=> have both statements prominent somewhere on your site! You say your truth so authentically here

          1. Don't minimize your service. People want to know what kind of a site they landed on. Be proud of the service you provide! You can prominently feature your blog and explain that you are provide studio / music services.

          2. Audio Playground is a great name for a blog / newsletter!

So I'm also not your target market (am a WOC but not music creator, nor age 14-29 yr old. So do show your site to as many women of colour in your age group as you can to get feedback!

      • I didn’t notice the discount countdown at first. I would suggest fixing the whole yellow countdown component to the viewport or make the font less “blended” with the background like increasing the weight or changing the color.
      • The “(and utility scripts)” bit can be removed since it’s a bit too detailed for a header. Maybe put this in the feature section instead. This way, there’s more room to elaborate on this point as well.
      • Is this not compatible with Firefox? It’ll be cool if this template uses web extensions.
      • TOC for the ebook?
      • The Hero section abstract human image could be replaced with something that’s more descriptive. I don’t have any idea what to replace it with, but it feels too generic and doesn’t give a good understanding of the app. I feel like it’s there just because there’s an empty space in it.
      • Do you expect people to already have an experience with creating browser extensions? just curious.
      • You can Sprinkle some more ethos here. I noticed you added the Day Counter example in the FAQ, maybe make it clearer that it has +4000 users so you really do know your shit.

      just my .02 👍
