Do you hate designing?

I’ve noticed that there’s a trend of a marketing / tech split for indiehackers. One partner does the marketing, the sales, the social media, the design, etc. while the other partner builds the database, backend, frontend, implements features, etc.

While design is great, something like marketing is never done and leads to long partnerships. Simply put, design feels less ongoing than marketing. So long as you give a developer a branding guide and homepage design, they can go pretty far with that. Hopefully, the marketing partner can also provide designs.

Now, it would be nice to fully design out a product and every feature, but quite frankly that’s overqualified for many MVPs out there. Plus, there’s a substantial cost to implementing your own custom design over choosing a theme like Tailwind UI.

For those that can’t design well themselves, I personally think there are many resources out there that can get you up to speed within a few months.

So, rather than partnering with someone that can design, I would rather partner with a marketing generalist that can promote, design, and more. Working on a small team often makes you a generalist, and that can mean sacrificing design quality in general or choosing templates over custom designs. And unfortunately, the consequence is a degraded the UI and UX experience.
