To be honest, it's not hard to name a product, but getting a domain is super hard!
I've been changing names over and over in order to get a domain. 🤣

beebot -> beeflow -> flowbee -> tinybee -> anybee -> aibee -> airbee -> ...

Don't expect too much, no .com domains available! 😫

Are there any legal implications for using another brand name in the domain?

I picked a name that suggests the purpose of the product. I think company names can be fanciful, but product names should be suggestive.

My is Escape. We are a security company and we find it fund because it represents at the same time the "ESC" key on your keyboard, but also the fact to backslash / escape strings.

Ask the bot for names.
"Give me fun and pronouncable list of 20 name with greek and latin roots that has a connection to chicken painting arts and crafts, that does not exist on the internet yet."

I normally suggest to go with the first name that came to your mind.

You can always change it later. 👍

It's based upon a few things:

1. Domain availability - I always go for .com
2. Short - I prefer shorter names, but I'll go for longer if it seems catchy.
3. Brandable/iconic potential - I want something that sounds good!

Examples: VCbackME.com I think gets the point across reasonably well. CashMyCondo.com as well.

My product is called UpEmbed.

It was me and my co-founder, sitting at a tea shop putting together random words to create a name for a video marketing tool. We got a pen and paper from the guy and we had just three requirements:

• it needs to be memorable
• it needs to be short
• it needs to be a .COM domain! :D

Focus was on the .COM more than anything else :D

I think in our 4th round of tea we UP + EMBED + .COM was born :D and the domain was available so we purchased it right away :D

Our initial branding was this :D made this using Canva xD This was a placeholder and I think it is still up on all of our social channels!

Later on my co-founder made it more formal by making this :D

I just try to come up with anything as fast as I can and use some Canvas template to create the logo and branding and I just don't give a second thought about it tbh

I built an AI tool to generate product names and domains, and then once it was functional, asked the tool to create its own name and logo. The result was https://www.indiehackers.com/product/smartynames-com

I wanted the admin system to be called Athena and so I named the main product Parthenon which is Athena's temple.

Sure, I'll share the story behind my product name, Autory.ai.
The name Autory is a combination of two words: "Auto" and "Author."
The idea behind our product is to help automate the content creation process and make every user feel like a pro author by using AI-powered tools.
We wanted something that conveyed the idea of automation and authorship, and Autory seemed like the perfect name to do that.
Additionally, we added the ".ai" extension to show that the product leverages Artificial Intelligence to deliver its value proposition.

It was straightforward for my last product: SEO + automatic = SEOmatic (https://seomatic.ai). I'm building a tool to help marketers generate 1000s of SEO pages so I think it makes sense 🤣

My app is about learning. I asked my kids how they would name it and one of them said “I would use the word Eureka somehow”.
Because Eureka is spelled differently in various languages I decided to use its English alternative that sounded similarly. Hence the Everycards.app

When we were developing our product (leanbe.ai), we had several ideas in mind for its name. As we progressed with the development process, we realized that we wanted a name that would accurately describe our mission of aiding product managers through lean and continuous product development methodologies.

Our initial thought was "Be Lean", but ultimately we chose "Lean Be" since it sounded better and fitting to our vision.

I found my product's name after taking a broader look at things. I look at the niche I was in, the problem I was solving, and most importantly the features I was solving. Tbh, I look for the . com domain name that I like the best. At the end of the day, it will provide better SEO and allow users/new users to locate your site (if they just recall the name)!

After searching around for affordable domain names, I came up with Turbolink.io. I chose this because my product offers paid links to web creator's content, faster.

It was all he could think about during the first phases of building our product

We catalog the internet's brands so users can find colors, fonts, mission statements, etc.

For our own branding we're starting minimalistic with black and white so we can focus on the site's user experience.

Meanwhile our art team is currently working on creating a bunch of dinosaurs for logos such as Apple's, Google's, etc

We plan to use our cute brand dinosaurs, Brandesauri, to promote more visuals on the website.

We did it internally. We did some research about how to come up with a name an story behind it and did several ideation sessions with the whole team!

I wanted a .com related to no-code, but all the obvious ones were taken. I'm not sure having a .com domain is 100% necessary, but they are supposed to be easier to rank on Google.

So, I started playing with prefixes and suffixes until I landed on Apocode ("apo" is a Greek prefix that means "without" or "away from"). And to my surprise, the .com was available.

Actually, I always have a star chart for that. Some brands are named after stars or planets. There were times when I found very successful brand names using these.

stylized.ai has 2 available spellings (with an s and a z), and the .ai domain was open ;)

Our name doesn't make sense like viaNotion, but I guess it works.

We help companies to choose the right person to hire, thus prolonging the working life of the company. We named it Commyt just because we do it for developers and deliver the commitment on behalf of companies.

All based on what .com domain I can find. I developed a small algo that will make 500 domains for each word you give it and try to search. 95% of them are trash, but 5% are quite good. It is quite simple, it takes good prefixes and suffixes and combines them. E.g. we made system to make beautiful documents simply, and we put in doc and it made us https://ElegantDoc.com

We are building https://www.beacon.li. It's a no-code platform to easily integrate in-app actions, help search widget in your SaaS to elevate user experience (Notion/GitHub/SuperHuman etc like Cmd +K command palette).

We wanted to use a simple one word name and closely resembles what we are doing instead of a direct functional name. It's our choice nothing right or wrong. We actually came up three different names for this product.

We ran a poll here in IndieHackers, Reddit (r/SaaS), and within our community. Surprisingly, across all the channels, Beacon won it :).

The website is a repo of tools made by indie hackers, so the whole concept is self-explanatory in my opinion.

As for the branding, indie hackers are usually developers, and it is generally believed that devs like dark mode (or like to joke about dark mode), so I used dark colours in the UI and pink to spice it up.

The gears in the logo hint about "grinding", which is what indie hackers do all the time.

I like when I don't have to think and guess what the product is about. The simpler, the better.

That's why I named my product "Creative"
It means that everyone can be creative. And everyone can create visual content without minimal design skills.

I made an chrome extension that answers questions about the page and let’s you summarize it. I called it BLUF.

At work a lot of people would put BLUF at the top of documents and provide summaries. It stands for Bottom Line Up Front. I liked how simple and unique the name was and the domain bluf.ai was available

I was using the name "Abstrakt" before, which isn't ideal because: 1) typos in names are best avoided if you're not a huge brand. 2) "Abstract" feels overused and too pretentious.

You shouldn’t use another company’s name or registered trademark as your business name. It’s not clear to consumers that your business is not legally affiliated with Notion. If you continue and they become aware of you, Notion will likely ask you to change your name. Better to change it now.
