After the first version of Smartynames launched with a roaring success, I have been looking for ways to improve and to simplify the service.

Today, I'd like to show you our new "reverse domain search". All you need is a URL of the domain you like, and Smartynames will find a dozen similar domains.

Smarty first tries to understand what the domain you provide is a about, or if it's not currently hosting anything, what it could be a great domain for. Then, it automatically validates domains for availability and gives you a number of options to buy them. I have some exciting news to share. As of today, SmartyNames.com has generated over 1 Million domain names. This might be a blip on the radar for the industry, but to me, this is a huge milestone.

I have never set out to be a domainer. When I first launched Smartynames on Hacker News in December of 2022 (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33882497), it was just an interesting project worth sharing. Since then I have been meeting people and learning all about this space, and as it turns out, domains are a big business.

It is one of those boring tech ideas that is completely overlooked because the incumbents are collecting all the money, and no one is doing anything particularly new.

I think it's time for a change. I want Smartynames to be the industry leader in the instant domain name search, using innovations in AI to offer new creative solutions for domain discovery, as well as buying and selling.

Currently smarty offers the best AI generated names, but I want more. I am thinking business tools for creators to build on top of exciting new domain names, a marketplace for buying and selling those names, a way to create and publish website with AI and much more.

In my exploration of OpenAI, I just created a domain-name search that takes business description as an input, and generates interesting domain names for it. It then uses DNSimple API to check if .com is available.

In my view it is a much easier way to find a suitable domain, as the AI thinks of a much large pool of possible names than my own brain. SmartyNames found its own name, using the tool itself.
