How do you promote your affiliate programs?
For those that are running their own affiliate programs (e.g. rewardful, etc.) - how do you recruit/promote to affiliates?
I've done a search and found "marketplaces" like clickbank - but it looks like you need to use their "systems" to access their affiliates.
I’m working on an affiliate program for TaskBill.io and was wondering that same thing. All of the marketplaces I could find seemed strange and not legit.
I just signed up for the “done for you” program at dfy.refmonkey.com with the idea of them figuring that out for me for. I figured it was worth a shot, check back with me in a month and I will let you know how it goes!

1 thing: big difference between referrals and affiliates. If you're doing referrals just make it part of your onboarding and customer journey or your customer lifecycle.

but replace the best email marketing with your topic. Try a few.
find youtubers, bloggers, writers, other tangentially related businesses or indiehackers that will write about your product. Give them a free trial longer than normal. Give them some unique experience that isn't too hard to give them but is more than normal.

We had a few customers ask for it.
We get a lot of signups but they don't seem to be able to get folks to convert.
We had 1 affiliate do pretty good for a while, I think you need to work with a few "influencers" and help them create content etc.
I agree with this. I've had to work with influencers to get my affiliate program going. And even then, they need to have a large following because the conversion is pretty bad (and some people wont' click on the affiliate link but go directly to your site), and they need to constantly promote your product (not in all the content they create but in many across the year).
We had the same issue. Have you had better results with “influencers”? Part of me wonders whether it’s a matter of just getting enough affiliates (even if non-influencer)
We haven't invested any time into it.
I think you need organic influencers, once we get a big player we will work hard with them

I found contacting developers, authors, websites directly works best. I’ve posted on Twitter a couple times but got zero response.
