How Hackathons became a Growth hack for our Startup

How Hackathons became a Growth Hack for our Startup? 🚀

Did you know that hackathons can help your startup grow? And I'm not talking about just sponsoring one, but conducting your own hackathon. 🧐

You might be thinking, "Aren't hackathons for big enterprises with deep pockets?" I had the same notion once. In fact, I proposed hackathons at my previous startup job, only to have it rejected due to these biases. 🤦

But when I started UXHack, I had the urge to validate my hypothesis.

Initially, we were a platform for UX feedback from pros & aspirants. To grow, I needed:

1️⃣ Users to give feedback

2️⃣ Startups to post problems

But my challenges?

👛 Tiny budget

🚫 No coding problem

I couldn't just call it a "Hackathon." It would send the wrong signals. Here's what I did:

  1. Termed it 'UX Hackathon'
  2. Partnered for distribution with a co-working space UnBoxed Coworking
  3. Partnered with a PM certification program partner i.e. to give discounts to winners

The first hackathon gave us 200+ users and engagement with 5 startups. We did around 7-8 hackathons, gaining 1k+ users in a couple of years.

So if you are wondering if hackathons are right for your startup?

Here are a few takeaways:

  1. It's not just coding: Hackathons can solve design, UX, or feedback problems too.
  2. Should fit with business: Ensure it aligns with your startup's needs.
  3. No big budget needed: Prizes can be vouchers, internships, or job offers.
  4. Distribution is key: Partnerships for outreach, rewards, and judges.
  5. Leverage platforms/tools: Use tech to make it efficient.
  6. Go online: Online hackathons often offer better ROI.
