I Got My First Paying SaaS Customer Using My Own Tool (SEO + Blogging Breakdown)

Hey IndieHackers đź‘‹

I’m a solo founder in my 20s building a SaaS product called SERPtag a fast keyword rank tracker that helps you monitor your rankings and discover new keywords you’re already showing up for.

The crazy part? I used SERPtag itself to land my first paying customer. Here’s exactly how I did it 👇

🔑 Step 1: Keyword Research That Actually Worked

Before I even started blogging, I spent a lot of time doing keyword research. My goal wasn’t to chase high-volume, super competitive terms (I’d never outrank the big players for those). Instead, I focused on low-competition, high-intent keywords in my niche.

Using SERPtag, I built out a list of keywords I knew I had a real shot at ranking for. These weren’t vanity terms — they were search phrases that aligned directly with people looking for rank tracking or SEO tools.

📝 Step 2: Blogging with a Purpose

Next, I started writing blog posts targeting those keywords. Every post focused on solving a specific problem. No fluff. No generic “Top 10 SEO Tips” kind of content.

Instead, I wrote posts like:
âś… How to track keyword rankings for free
✅ How to find hidden keywords you’re already ranking for
âś… Why most rank trackers are too slow for modern SEO

Each blog was written with SEO in mind — clear titles, headers, and internal links pointing to my main feature pages.

📊 Step 3: Tracking Progress with SERPtag

After publishing, I tracked my rankings in SERPtag daily. What surprised me was how quickly I started seeing movement on smaller keywords.

Even better I discovered a handful of new keywords I was already ranking for without realizing it. That gave me more content ideas and allowed me to optimize existing pages to climb even higher.

🎉 The Result: First Paying Customer

Within a couple of months, organic clicks started picking up. It wasn’t massive but one of those readers signed up and became my first paying customer.

It felt surreal seeing it work:
✅ Keyword research → ✅ Blogs → ✅ Rankings → ✅ Customer

🚀 What I Learned

  • Start small: Long-tail, low-competition keywords are gold.
  • Blogging is compounding: Each post builds momentum.
  • Track everything: Knowing which keywords are moving lets you double down.

I’m still early, but using my own tool to get results was a huge confidence boost.

If you’re building a SaaS or thinking about blogging for traffic, happy to share more about my process.
