I personally would find some other way, but to each their own!

This is very obvious step to take. My company names is HikeOrders. I won both HikeOrders.com and HikeOrder.com ( plural and singular ) .

When you go to HikeOrder.com it gets redirected to HikeOrders.com

Buying the non-plural, well done. Do you measure how much that domain contributes to revenue?

      1. 1

Actually it was not purchased for revenue purpose. Instead it was purchased to avoid scammers using similar looking domain and cheat my customers in some way.

I first purchased HikeOrders.com. Then after a week, I decided to purchase HikeOrder.com as well to be on safer side.

In the end, the domain purchase is really a customer service. It seems very likely people entering that into their browser are really looking for HikeOrders.com, you're saving them time as well.

How do we determine the value of a catchy domain we aren't using but have had for years?

    1. 1

I also have a few domains I've had for years. Been thinking of selling them or make a landing page for it? Would love to get advice on this as well.

Hubspot CTO Dharmesh Shah just spent over 10 million on a domain that he isn't sure what he is going to use for. Domains can be an investment. Imagine going back to the 90s, buying 1,000 single-word dot coms, holding them for 20 years, and selling them for millions.

Wow, took a big bet but it paid off. Definitely says a lot about always testing and always go with your gut, don't listen to negativity. Congrats!!

Very interesting, the fact that after spending 35000 dollars which actually seems like a crazy decision turned out to work well for you. I never realised that incorrect domains where actually a huge problem. that's crazy.

Do you think it makes sense to buy a bunch of sibling urls off the bat if they are cheap? Or would you wait for a clear data-driven decision like in your story? If you could go back earlier and blindly buy this domain would you have?

    1. 1

yeah thats what i was thinking too. While starting up the business, if someone is serious about it, might just be worth it to buy a bunch of sibling URLs rather than wait. It could just get more expensive later.

Great story! Seems like the investment was well worth it :)

Thanks for sharing! I never thought typo domain traffic would be that high.

    1. 1

these domains even get referral traffic as people often link to wrong domain names

  14. 1

Wow, it's amazing to see how owning a typo domain can prove to be a highly profitable investment for a startup.

Perhaps, I should also consider doing something like this for my feedback tool, Korrect

Thank you once again for sharing such valuable insight 😃

I don't think it normally would. But if you read closely, someone tweeted a misspelling of his primary domain with a high amount of twitter followers.
