•• I will tell you how to monetize your project (#2)

You have an idea, a side project or a real project ?
You have difficulties to monetize it ?

Share me details in comments and I will give you some ideas how to monetize it, maybe find your product market fit or simply how to improve your system to earn more money with your existing project :)

(Yes I know, I already made a similar post two weeks ago and it got more than 100 comments, I guess it's useful for you so I'll do it a second time aha)

    Nice!

What do you think is the best way to monetise datajedi.io - a data science learning community where members learn by building real-world data science projects? Keep in mind our target audience is African data scientists.

    1. 1

Aha let me ask for more details :)

      1. Is it like a sort of interacting school ?

      2. Why is especially an African audience, you have a YouTube channel or something like that ? Cause it's in English

      3. Have you lot of members ? (can you tell me how many person :))

I have some fun ideas that can interest you but you must answer me before aha

      1. 1

1 - I'm not sure what you mean by interacting school but the idea is that after people have studied or done tutorials, they come to us to work on real projects, that involve real businesses or real-world scenarios as opposed to made-up ones in tutorials/courses.

2 - It's targeting Africa because I think there's a ton of untapped talent there, we're starting specifically with Nigeria first (because I'm Nigerian and have ties there) where English is our first language.

3 - I literally just launched this yesterday so officially none yet, but I anticipate to have at least 50 by the end of the year (myself and the team have a reputation in the Nigerian Data science scene).

        1. 1

aah you have companies that have real projects to work with? Because by interactive school I was thinking of some kind of course given as an example project, "make a SaaS that meets such and such a need", students must do it by themselves but can ask you.

Because with your explanation, all of a sudden my ideas don't work anymore ...

          1. 1

To be honest, that might be the path we end up taking, tha will certainly be part of the offering as getting projects from businesses isn't exactly quick and easy. We'll experimenting with this.

I'm still curious to hear your ideas IF it was an interactive school?

            1. 1

Well my original idea would have been simply to organize the learning in the form of a challenge. Example: whoever creates the best Saas that realizes "..." has won ... Participation prize: $10, the winner gets the money of the other participants (if there are 46 participants, the winner gets $460). To choose the challenge project, you go to companies and ask them what Saas they need and give their answer as Challenge, once the challenge is over, you sell the Saas to the company to earn money.

        2. 1

Where do you get the real world projects from? Have you connections to companies?

          1. 1

            3 sources:

            • From projects we create/scope put
            • Startups where I have connections
            • Upwork and freelancer sites

    Interesting.

I have a simple Daily Journal App: https://thedailyminijournal.netlify.app/

I can of course add a bunch of features and create a premium version but curious if you see other ways I can monetize. Thanks.

    1. 2

I might try to connect it with other services, to encourage people to do things that are beneficial to their lives... For example, add a "suggested task" section, in which you could put things like "go for an hour walk", "cook a balanced meal", etc. And when there will be more users, brands will be able to pay to appear in the spots like "see the movie" ... "" (for a movie producer), "taste the new" ... "" (for a new food product), etc... It could be an original way to monetize a Daily Journal aha

      1. 1

        Nice! That's original :)

    Wow, man really nice!
I'm currently working on my MVP https://remoteteamactivities.carrd.co/
I am developing an online service to help remote workers have fun and connect with their team with curated activities.
    Thanks a lot!

    1. 2

What kind of activities do you propose and do you already have users? (maybe a simple Facebook/slack group can be used as an MVP)

      1. 1

        These are the categories https://makeagif.com/i/5YwKIF
I am currently doing some activities with my team of <10 people at my dayjob, we have a slack group and have done remote yoga, coffee and games.
They love the things so far, but I am not sure how to take it out of this circle and into another (paid) offer / circle

        1. 2

Maybe try to see if there are services that offer paid online activities (a virtual escape game for example) that could be integrated into your list on which you would receive a commission? I think that might be a start. In the future, you could offer a lot of similar paid activities that would be managed by external services, you would make a monthly subscription that gives you access to one paid activity per week.

          1. 1

            great, thanks big time!

    2. 2

      I like your landing page.
What kind of activities are you planning?

Didn't you already propose your idea the first time I made a post "I will tell you ow to monetize" aha?

        1. 1

Ah yes I saw that I didn't answer you, I must have forgotten aha! You say that you have a great community, already you manage to earn a little money or not at all? I mean even a few dollars.

Would like to hear your thoughts about this shopify app: https://apps.shopify.com/joboodle
I am working on new features that will be released by the beginning of 2021. I chose not promoting the app until I release the new features

    1. 1

I can't understand, what does your application do?

      1. 1

I think this is a feedback itself...
my app creates a jobs board in shopify stores, and the merchant can manage applicants, jobs...

  13. 1

Here I give u something to think about...
    wannahireme.com

basically you start a page with a unique url...then you share the url or add a hire me button to your side projects

    1. 1

Concretely how do users use your project? + you have a lot of users?

      1. 1

Users basically create a page with all their job profiles like linkedin, upwork, fiverrr etc...and their profiles from github, codepen, dribble etc showcasing their work ...they can also upload their resume ...
They can share the page url on their side projects or add a hire me button to their side projects like websites and git repositories etc..

Basically linktree / buymeacoffee for ppl looking to get hired

I also have a job board which I launched this week.

I launched at the start of November...I have about 100+ users right now...not a lot,I Know but i would like to know how I could make money where I to get about 10,000+ users...

    1. 1

Can you describe your project ?

I wanna build an online teaching platform. How can I get to know who is my targeted audience? What's the best way to monetize that? Where to start with surveys to validate it? Thank you.

There are thousands of learning platforms out there, what are the specifics of yours, why would people go on your platform instead of someone else's? What problems have you found on other platforms that you can improve?

I developed a CRM software targeting those with low budget. It has features like all other CRMs - leads, deals, contacts, accounts, customer queries, products, quotations, invoices, and etc.

    1. 1

Doesn't there already exist free CRM software?

  18. 1

    Good idea!

Would love to hear your thoughts on https://www.streambee.io - Twitch analytics solution for gamers.

    1. 1

When I google Streambee it has all sorts of warnings how Streambee hijacks the browser and opens ads etc - is it your software that is doing that? I can post a screenshot of the results.

      1. 1

Those are auto-generated articles. And since we have a new website and a new brand, it's visible at the top. What they do is basically when a new website pops up they make an automated screenshot and create an article that looks like that site is doing something bad and they promote their antivirus system.

Not sure about how to handle this kind of misleading articles :/

    2. 1

@MarketingPlayer I like the design too. How did you find the designer or did you design it by yourself?

      1. 1

We have an in-house illustrator and in-house front-end developer. Thanks for the nice words!

    3. 1

Ow I really like the design of the site!

You already have users? Can you show me the sites of your competitors so I can study it a little better? :)

      1. 1

That's great to hear you like our website!

Some of them are here, but we are a bit different than any of them. Monetization is tricky for us. You don't want to bill streamers that much, because they provide a user base, but still they will be the majority of the platform. B2B features, from one we are currently building, seems more suitable for us, but we would love to hear from you.

        powerspike. tv/
        streamhatchet. com/
        streamelements. com/
        streamcoi. com/

We do have some alpha testers, but we are still finishing some features and waiting for twitch approval, so it's mostly ourselves testing.

        1. 1

What I'm going to say may be silly because I confess that I don't know much about the stream business, but in business there is a rule that says that in a market, there are only certain types of players that survive and make a profit ...

I will take the smartphone market as an example:

          1. The cheapest:
example: Xiaomi/Wico who only earn money on their own app store.

          2. The most popular :
Example: Samsung/Huawei who sell the most phones and make money on quantity.

          3. The most expensive :
Example: Apple, very expensive phones with big margins that leave more capacity for advertising lead to a virtuous circle for the brand.

In your market, you are not the most popular, and usually waging war on the cheapest one requires a lot of money to last long until everyone else dies but you ...

Why wouldn't you offer a more expensive, high-end service to stand out from the crowd?

  19. 1

I'm curious, have a look at my MVP: www.browsegenres.com
Helps you to find Genres of artists listed on Spotify.
(Disclaimer, you would have to register an account, I know this sucks and I'm working on it. Would be nice if you take this extra step).
    cheers!

    1. 2

Yes, it would be nice not to have to do an account, I'll tell you why. When you ask someone to create an account, beyond the technical constraint, from a business point of view, what is interesting is to have the email to propose offers to the potential customer.

Now in your case, I think the service is interesting, (I'm bored with not discovering new artists on Spotify ...) but I think the service is seen as a convenience ... I mean nobody expects to pay for it ...

My advice to you is to try to give access to this service to as many people as possible by introducing affiliation to platforms (spotify, amazon music, deezer, etc.) to listen directly to the artist. You will capture very little revenue but it will be better than nothing.

Then in a second step, have a great service that people often come back to to propose to put artists forward for a fee (make the artists pay rather than the users).

Here is what I think :)

      1. 1

Yes, thanks for your comment! We pretty much align. I know to ask a user for registration doesn't make sense is just annoying. It was part of the project for educational reasons.

My advice to you is to try to give access to this service to as many people as possible by introducing affiliation to platforms (spotify, amazon music, deezer, etc.) to listen directly to the artist. You will capture very little revenue but it will be better than nothing.

I don't know exactly what you mean. Affiliation, yes, if you mean someone might become premium user via my platform, ok. Listening directly to the artists will be difficult, if not impossible, due to legal / license reasons. That's why you get only 30 second snippets. And feedback received so far shows that this is enough to get hooked to an artist or not, say go to spotify afterwards and find out more.

My goal is to provide a new starting point for spotify users. As you said, at some point you seem not able to find new artists any more which is frustrating. Spotify is good in radio function but sucks in exploring artists. I want to help at this point.

        1. 1

By affiliation, I mean that once the person listening to the 30 seconds of audio, you offer him to listen to the entire music on the platform of his choice among those you offer (affiliate link at spotify, amazon music, etc.) Of course you have to find out which platform offers an affiliation service, I know it exists for kindle amazon and kindle music, we have the right to create a free account for 30 days and at the end if the customer upgrades to a premium subscription, we get a commission.

A list of gumroad courses ranked according to user votes

  21. 1

    Hey!

We're building a Twitter analytics tool for Gumroad sales, so sellers could know how their tweets impact sales and improve conversion rates.

    https://www.venn.click

    Thanks a lot!

    1. 2

Why is it only for your Gumroad sales? Is it a technical constraint? Are there other tools for analyzing sales on twitter?

      1. 1

Both Twitter & Gumroad have pretty easy integrations & APIs so time-to-market should be short (infact, we started this as a side project on Friday and we already got them both "Talking" to each other).

Also, Gumroad is on the rise - the entry barriers are super low. If you want to start selling FAST you will end up in Gumroad. If you want to promote FAST you will end up on twitter. So that's a gap we spotted (we think).

        More on that here: https://twitter.com/venn_click/status/1333672590301405184

We are not aware of tools that do quite the same as we do. We pinpoint a specific tweet to a sale. Other analytic tools show "Twitter" as a source of reference - but how do you know what did the trick? Which tweet was useful and had most impact on your sales?

Essentially, we are trying to validate the idea - tech & business wise - as fast as possible. If things will go OK it can be expanded to other platforms as well.

        1. 1

ok so typically your customers are gumroad creators right?

            1. 1

Well I don't know, maybe a solution would be to propose a complete promotion service for the creator's gumroad projects with an analeptic follow up of the results, I don't really know, it seems easier to monetize it.

  22. 1

I built a no bloat static site generator http://mkws.sh/, no JavaScript, no npm. Just download and start building your static site.

    1. 1

If there's no JS, what about small interactive elements on the site is handled? Like sidebar toggle?

Isn't the use cases to limited? Maybe you can list what type of websites is suitable to be built using your tool, and give some examples or templates to get started on the homepage. It's daunting to walk in something this new with not much guidance.

I think this is way too simple. I'm using Gridsome btw.

      1. 1

You can add the JS yourself to add interactive elements, but it's recommended only on the client side, I'm talking about the static site generator itself, you don't have to do npm install for instance because most dependencies are already present on the system, you can start working with a lot of tools out of the box (variables, loops, conditionals, includes, present in the shell which is available on any UNIX machine, also the whole UNIX ecosystem) without downloading (and managing) anything.

I'm neither for nor against JavaScript, I believe, and I may be wrong, that for small, simple presentation sites or landing pages you don't need all the complexity (and associated headaches) that come with the JavaScript ecosystem at least when it comes to static sites, it's a good idea to have a relatively simple templating engine and a simple way of managing files.

Can you show me some examples of Gridsome sites you've built, I would like to check if they could be written with mkws(1).

        EDIT:
I just saw your personal website https://laurensi.us/, except for the blog part (which I don't a have plugin developed for yet), and I think it's a very good candidate for my static site generator. You have two minisites, you could create two layout files for each of them with the common (top and bottom) nav elements, and templates for each page. You can either generate them from a single ./bin/mkws file or two. All without the headaches of the JavaScript ecosystem.

        1. 1

Maybe the website is "too simple" because I don't have design skills. :D

          1. 1

Websites with text only is kinda trending. It is too simple, but I dont really need anymore for now.

Maybe you can start looking at what other tools' templates. Maybe check what Hugo, Gridsome, Gatsby are offering as their starter. Or maybe looking at cargo.site or squarespace.

    2. 1

Can you show me some exemples of site build with your service ? :)

      1. 1

As far as I know https://mkws.sh/ and http://adi.tilde.institute/ are the only two sites built with it and both are mine! There may be other sites out there but I'm not aware of them. :D

        1. 1

Ok thanks and can you list me the benefits of creating that kind of website ? :)

          1. 1

From a technical point of view it means not having to deal with the complexity associated with other static site generators. By complexity I mean packages, package managers, config files. It's just code.

You just program it via (in my opinion) a simple templating system and one language (only one, so no analysis paralysis). You don't have to download dependencies, you just download it and start programming with a very powerful set of tools behind it (the UNIX ecosystem), so you spend more time actually creating your website than configuring the static site generator.

It's also very flexible as it makes little assumptions and highly extensible and customizable via tiny scripts.

            1. 1

To be very honest, I don't think it's a very good idea... Why? Because people who don't have the skills to create a site with java, css, etc.. (me aha) use platforms like wordpress, shopify, etc... And people who know how to code make real sites and have no reason to make an ultra simple and not very aesthetic site... I'm wrong?

              1. 1

Well, it is a tool to make real sites :D you can make them aesthetically wise however you prefer, my website is not great from a design POV because I don't have design skills, what my tool's main focus is simplifying generation of HTML pages from template files. I don't think less code bloat is a bad idea.

  23. 1

I run a community for Mustang car enthusiasts. Largest in Europe. Much traction. Tried out different monetization models. AdWords is not an option. Open for new ideas :)

    1. 1

Can you share me your website ? I already have an idea but I must think a bit before aha

      1. 1

Sure! It is mustang6.de (in German though)

  24. 1

Hey @El_crocodilo I don't have any business but nice kickstarter project, it's a nice design! 😂

    1. 1

Ok it doesn't matter aha you don't have an idea or you just don't want to start a business ?

      • Thanks it's a pleasure ;)
      1. 1

Well I don't really have that much idea, I'd like to but I feel like I don't have the skills to do a business, I know how to code websites but that's all ...

        1. 1

So in this case, what I advise you to do is to copy/inspire other businesses, just look for something that already works (a validated idea) and do in your version, it will allow you 2 things:

          1. To make a small income, something that is never negligible aha

          2. Will allow you to confront yourself with the reality of creating a project, you will become aware of the difficulties, the things you like and the things you don't like. That way, the day you will find an idea for a project that you really care about, you will already have some experience to realize it.

The important thing is to practice ;)

          1. 1

Oh yes, that's a good idea! How can I find something easy to copy that makes money and would be a good practice ??

            1. 1

Well I can't really tell you how to find a good training for your skills, but I can tell you how to find a project to copy to earn a little income aha!

You go on trustpilot and you look at sites that have +1000 reviews that you think are easy to copy ... You look at their bad reviews, and you create your version of the site trying to correct the details that customers complain about, so you will find your market segment in a domain that has already been validated by the market :)

              1. 1

Aha I realize that this is absolutely not the subject of the post XD

                1. 1

Ooooh great idea, I'll do it right now! Thank you!! Sorry for the off-topic

                  1. 1

aha it's not a bad thing at all on the contrary it will probably be useful to others too ;) Thanks to you

Do you know the theory of the 1000 real fans? It's a theory that says that if you have 1000 real fans, people who unconditionally read everything you do, they will make you live if you ask them properly. I think you're in a branding issue, you should create a very tightly knit audience with whom you share value and from time to time offer them something like a paid extra item, a paid training, if you're really a lot, a paid slack, etc. I think that's a good idea.

      Interesting article : https://kk.org/thetechnium/1000-true-fans/
