Introducing Doomerfood - emergency food kit delivered to your door (atm Toronto, San Francisco only)

Hi all,

I've been following news on the coronavirus since it started to break in mid January.

In that time I collected a small but reliable food stash for myself and my wife, in case we have to be quarantined as they did in Wuhan.

Long story short, I'm currently taking a break from full-time work and thought, "I could actually drive these food items to other people myself", and Doomerfood was born:

https://doomerfood.com

The name is gently making light of the fact that people who prepare in advance are sometimes (and perhaps unfairly) typecast as doomers. 1% of sales will go to the homeless, people who aren't as fortunate to be able to buy food in a crisis.

Even if you're not in Toronto or San Francisco, I would appreciate if you take a look and let me know any feedback if the landing page makes sense or not.

Take care everyone.

Really like the concept—especially the mix of practicality and a bit of humor in the branding. The value prop is clear, but you might make it even stronger by quickly answering “why this over just ordering groceries?” (e.g., curated essentials, faster delivery during panic buying, reliability in shortages). Also, the 1% donation angle is a great touch—it adds trust and purpose. Overall, solid idea, especially given the timing.

That’s a really thoughtful idea, and I like how you turned preparation into something that helps others too. The name Doomerfood actually fits perfectly — a little humor with a real purpose behind it. The landing page looks clear and simple; I especially like the donation angle, it adds a nice touch of humanity.

    Hi,

Just dropping a few feedbacks (please excuse if I'm too critical, I'll start with the bad points).

    • I don't really like the landing page colors / font.
    • I find it hard to read
    • It think, it does not really reflect the idea of "doomer" (I was thinking of something darker; like dark and red, with a big warning sign, or something like that)

    I'm also asking the question:

    • What guarantees that I really will be delivered if the crisis is important?
    • How much does that cost? Is the role of the landing page to subscribe or to measure my interest? If it's the latter, I think it could be more explicit.

But, now, the really good point:

"It's really innovative! Never heard about solutions like that".

And, I'm sure that by this time, you will be able to sell a bunch of it. Just pick the right time, the right place, and, you'll be probably capable of helping a lot of people".

Moreover, giving back a percentage of your earning is a very smart thing. It's quite questionable to make people pay a lot because you will give them something they really need for their life (like food, water, or something like that). But, if you don't make it too expensive (or make it free if you can, using state funds or something like that), and you even give back a percentage, that makes the project much more acceptable (according to my own ethics).

Hey no problems. Thanks for the warning, I didn't feel like you were being too critical at all :)

They're good questions to ask too. You're right about the landing page, it doesn't really fit the theme. It's probably partially my wife's influence, but I also wanted it to be the opposite of alarmist and more of a calm and peaceful feel. If anything, to make it play into the humour of the situation, by presenting these happy people at ease with their food. I can't overdo the humour though, because it's a very real product I'm providing, and if it's overdone people will think that it's not real.

Regarding the guarantees that food will be available in a crisis - quite simply, there won't be a guarantee, and I'll have to be very explicit in communicating this on the site before people buy. Also, there'll be a limit every day. So say that 10 packages or whatever have been ordered on Monday, you won't be able to order anymore.

Perhaps not the best, but I really don't see this being more than a short term business. Just merely something to help people in the short term, if they're worried but stuck at work with limited time. If there's a real quarantine in 3-4 weeks, the grocery shelves are going to get very empty very fast.

Regarding more information and the cost, that's another good point. I think I'd definitely take this on and provide more info on the landing page if I wasn't planning on launching within the next few days. So the landing page won't be around for long at all.

That's a good point about the questionability to make people pay a lot more for something because it's in greater demand - I need to make it clear to customers that there is going to be NO surge pricing. For one thing, any practise like this is against my religious beliefs, which when applied to business can basically be summed as... basic capitalism is good, but exploitation is not (which is the appeal of indiehackers I feel, lol, people aren't motivated by greed here).

    Hey Mike,

Really cool initiative with Doomerfood! It's great to see someone stepping up to help people prepare during uncertain times. The name is a clever touch too—makes it feel both practical and a little tongue-in-cheek.

I took a look at the landing page, and it’s pretty straightforward, which is great for an emergency service like this. One suggestion—maybe highlight the types of food included in the kit more prominently? That could help people quickly understand what they're getting.

Also, if you're ever expanding to new locations or looking at partnerships, feel free to check out https://mangmenuprices.ph. It's a food-related resource I’m involved with, and who knows—there might be some synergy down the line!

Wishing you all the best with this!

Addressing a critical need during uncertain times. To improve the landing page, focus on making your value proposition immediately clear with a strong headline that emphasizes emergency food delivery. Adding visuals of your food packages and showcasing testimonials or customer reviews can build trust and engagement. Strengthen your call-to-action buttons with phrases that encourage immediate action, such as order now or get prepared today. Highlight the charitable aspect prominently to emphasize your mission-driven approach. Finally, consider refining your branding to appeal to a broader audience while maintaining its unique and memorable edge. With these adjustments, your initiative could resonate more deeply and reach a larger audience effectively.

    Hi there,

It's commendable that you've taken the initiative to create Doomerfood and contribute to the community during these challenging times. Your idea of supporting the homeless with a percentage of sales is a thoughtful touch. I visited your website and found the concept and layout quite clear and straightforward. The name is intriguing, and the humor adds a personal touch.

I appreciate the effort you've put into preparing and delivering food items. It's a great way to support your community, and I hope your venture proves successful. Even though I didn't find any mention of "PickleballsPlay" on your site, I assume it's an unrelated keyword or perhaps a fun addition.

Take care and best of luck with Doomerfood!

After launching the app and seeing the money in my account, I can confidently say that I can't wait to read the honest and positive reviews of one of our users. I know this isn't common for developers, but it's been one of my biggest motivations lately. After you
get the ranking, you create a website, monetize your site and rate the site.
