Made 4k πŸ’΅ with Job Board Search πŸ”Ž

Made 4k πŸ’΅ with Job Board Search πŸ”Ž

Built it with a single PHP file, vanilla CSS & JavaScript!

Inspired by

Pieter Levels @levelsio

β€’ Ship asap
β€’ Minimalist tech
β€’ Transparent / #buildinpublic

Daniel Vassallo @dvassallo

β€’ Small Bets
β€’ Low Hanging-Fruit
β€’ Randomness / Luck

Why? / How? πŸ‘‡

Why?

  • Learned that StackOverflow Jobs was shutting down from a @levelsio tweet on a late Saturday night. Some folks were asking about alternatives (Low-hanging fruit)
  • The same night registered stackoverflowjobsalternatives.com (Small bets) , next morning made a quick MVP in 5 hours and tweeted about it (Ship asap / Minimalistic)

How?

  • Pieter liked it, and suggested including feature tags, it did it right away (Ship asap), he sent me a DM the next day and made an RT of the tweet and a lot of founders started to reach out to get added and started to gain traction (Randomness)
  • I launched on Product Hunt really quickly, it was my 1st time ever and I did it really wrong, but even if I did get only 47 upvotes it drove traffic and more founders reached out.
  • I sent a DM to Pieter asking about the sponsored slots , he suggested me some pricing, also pivoting to a job board directory, picking the name jobboardsearch.com

Pieter DM

  • I tweeted about the slots, and right away Phil from 4 day week job board acquired a slot (Luck) and it was the 1st ever money made πŸ€‘

  • Inspired by Guilherme Rizzo from CSS Scan made a post on Reddit and it went viral (Randomness / Luck) and got a lot of feedback, traffic, exposure, and awareness, it was a blast πŸš€

As you can see there is a lot of Randomness and Luck involved πŸ€, but also a lot of time on the laptop:

Promoting
β€’ Twitter (Mostly)
β€’ Hacker News
β€’ Reddit

Coding (in public)
β€’ Features
β€’ Automations
β€’ Including job boards
β€’ Programmatic SEO

I don't see it as a win but a really small one! Sure there is luck involved but don't forget πŸ‘‡

β€œLuck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” - Seneca

Keep it up πŸ’ͺ and enjoy the ride!

Hope you liked the story (sorry a bit long 😬), thanks a lot everyoneπŸ™

I am Rod (@rrmdp on Twitter) , building multiple projects in public and always happy to help and answer any question πŸ˜ƒ

Looking forward to hearing from you...

Great point. I've been building a Notion system
for job searching and the biggest game changer
was tracking interview notes alongside applications.
Most people only track where they applied but forget
to document what happened in each interview round.

Congrats! Taking advantage of a dying platform has always played well for many products. The level of luck you experienced is one in a lifetime.
