Namestorm (help me!) + You get help, post your app

Having second thoughts on my app name, looking for some fresh ideas. It is a stock trading journal that helps you review your trades and make yourself a better trader. It's currently called Sluicebox. The original thought was symbolism based on a sluicebox being used to separate the gold from dirt.

How can I help you? Perhaps sorting out a development problem, or giving design/marketing feedback? Seriously! I'd love to help you with something. Put my skills to work by responding!

Which names or concepts do you think of when you think of an app like mine?
Here are some I thought of:
Concepts:

  • Trading
  • Tracking / tracker
  • Strategy
  • Trail / Story
  • Compass
  • Radar

Names:

  • Sluicebox (obviously)
  • Trade Tactics
  • Tradefox
  • Tickertail
  • Tradar (taken, sadly)
  • Tradehawk

What's your app called? Post it! How can I help you with it?

If you ask me to pick a name, I would love to choose Tradefox. It's catchy and easy to remember.
But if you ask me a name to suggest, tracktix or tractix would be suitable too. It means tracking the ticks.

I don't have app yet. App is too complicated to build.

Hey clinkz -- thanks for your input! I like the tractix suggestion you made in particular. What do you find to be too complicated in building an app?

  2. 2

May I suggest being a bit more bold with your naming? Yes Tradefox, Tradehawk etc. make it clear what your product is and you could have a cute logo.

But look at the crypto trading platform Robinhood, that name really says, this is going to make you richer.

Imagine a name like Plutus, god of money.

Anywya just some thoughts, my app is called Portabella and I just came up with the name then ran with it

Great thoughts Alex! I think being bold could garner a lot of attention in the (often boring) financial niche.

Portabella looks like a great product!

A few thoughts on the landing page:

      • Love the "we couldn't see your data if we tried" line, seems like a powerful statement. Perhaps you could switch that and the previous sentence? So "end to end..." would end up being the last sentence in the description.
      • I like the minimal design, but perhaps you could add a tiny bit of flair to the hero / homepage by using a 4px colored border at the very top of the page? It would add some character without taking away from your minimal look.
      • Consider how you phrase some of the copy on the page. As a visitor, I see a lot of features, but no immediate benefits besides "security". The best marketing copy explains "how this will save you time" and "how much better your life will be with this product!". Features are great, but try to phrase them in a way that conveys the actual benefits I'll receive if I were to become a customer. Phrasing things this way is hard, and something I still struggle with too!
      • In the "data leaks" section, you might try using some lighter shades of black/gray to "design" the text a bit more. Also, the descriptions in this section could use a little bit more line height to help readability.
      • For a product like this, people are going to be really interested in how it compares to what they're used to. It's great that you've called this out with a section on the homepage. The dedicated "comparisons" page could be a hugely valuable selling point, so you may consider making the link to that page a bigger, more colorful button / CTA.
      • Additionally, the dedicated "comparisons" page could be styled better. You could make each link (Asana/Trello) a big button / card with their logo. Perhaps also some generalized supporting text about the comparisons?

Hope some of that is helpful!

Thanks! That is some amazing feedback. Going to implement your feedback over the weekend. I've just switched over to a static site generator so some pages are definitely still under construction.

Where exactly would you put the colored border, around the navbar? Around the whole hero section? Around just the text of the hero? Sorry just struggling to see what you mean.

        1. 1

That was just one idea to spice it up. Take a look at the very top of the page in the link below, there's a little teal border. (This is an old, dead project of mine that needs to be taken offline). I'd say use your brand color and make it solid (not a gradient like this one). Like I said though, just one idea to spice it up, maybe a pattern or some other way to introduce some color to the hero area would fit your brand better -- totally up to you!

Another example of this is actually on stackoverflow with the orange border on top.

    Hi Austen,
Naming is pretty hard, english is not my mother tongue I did get the meaning of Sluicebox. I like Tradehawk!

    My few ideas :

    • tradaholic (.co)
    • tradingactivity (.co)
    • tradestory (.co)
    • tradery (.co)

My app is Logology, it's the logo maker for design lovers. I'd like to have your feedback on our homepage and we just updated the UX of the logo proposal list. Lemme know what you think about it!

    1. 2

I thought of one more thing that would be a great addition -- if you could change the primary color once the logos were generated. This way if people have a brand color (or one in mind) they could easily tweak the logos a little bit to better match what they're thinking!

    2. 2

Xavier, love the ideas, and thank you very much for taking the time to contribute!

      For Logology Homepage:

      • The navbar has some wrapping text on the "My account" section which makes it look weird, change up the spacing or add whitespace: no-wrap so it is all on one line
      • For the hero area, I think the "logo grid" image could be about half the height of what it is now and still have the same effect. This also puts your other content closer to the top which is good because the hero image is cool, but having it be "full height" of the screen doesn't provide as much value as the content below.
      • On the "steps" (below the hero section), you might try to de-emphasize (make lighter in this case) the descriptions to make them "pop" more. There's a lot of black going on, so using some lighter gray values could really differentiate and put that "final touch" on those sections.
      • As far as content in those sections, it seems like you're saying "here are our features", but I think figuring out how to say "you get these benefits" would be more effective. For example, instead of saying "Take the brand discovery questionnaire..." you could say something like "Get your logo started with a few questions." Note how the former wording seems like something the user has to do (a burden), while the latter seems more like "here's what you get without effort!" -- subtle difference, but it can totally change engagement

      For the logo questionnaire:

      • You could remove the entire "Welcome to Logology" step. When I click the CTA from the homepage to get started on a logo, the last thing I want to do is read more about getting started. I'm ready to get started, let me start! Instead, just take folks to the next page, and show a little alert or something with that "why the questionnaire is important" type of info. This would let people get started right away while also giving them the background information you're trying to present with the intermediate page.
      • Love the questionnaire process! Although I think some more grays (it's a lot of black!) could go pretty far in making it feel more "designed".
      • Overall this process seems good, I think it's just getting people to that point and refining the design a bit (great theme you have so far with the design as a whole).
