I just learned a painful lesson about programmatic SEO while building my finance app.
I launched a large set of “tax comparison” pages across multiple countries and languages. On paper everything looked right:
Clean URL structure
Sitemap submitted
Internal consistency
Scalable setup
But Google Search Console told a different story:

Most pages were either
“Crawled – currently not indexed” or
“Discovered – currently not indexed”
Basically: Google saw them… and ignored them.
After digging into it, I realized the problem wasn’t technical — it was structural:
Too many near-duplicate pages
(e.g. Switzerland vs UK AND UK vs Switzerland)
Not enough unique value
I had data, but not insight
Weak internal linking
Pages weren’t part of a clear hierarchy
No prioritization
I treated all pages as equally important
What I changed:
Removed / canonicalized duplicate combinations
Focused on fewer, higher-quality pages
Added actual narratives (who benefits, why it matters)
Built hub pages and improved internal linking
Only pushed a small batch for indexing
Key takeaway:
Programmatic SEO only works if each page can stand on its own.
Otherwise Google treats it like noise.
Now I’m starting to see the first pages getting indexed properly — let’s see how it develops.
