Unsure if this is the correct group or not, but was unable to find something more suitable.
Just recently launched Vatfy.com on ProductHunt and HackerNews and find myself with a bit of traction. 🎉
I received a couple of signups to my free plan and am now wondering if I should personally send them an email thanking them for signing up and taking my product for a spin (in addition to the automated onboarding email).
I am wondering if I am missing something here, most probably won't expect something like that to happen or would think this is just another automated follow-up email.
What are your thoughts on that?
I suggest you do it manually. They aren't much, are they?
I had this same problem and can make recommendations on a tool to automate this if you are looking to automate.
But I personally will do it manually until it there is need to scale.
I will do it manually, but am keen to find out what tool you would recommend.
Actually a project I am working on - murlist.com. It lets you send personalized videos in emails.
Let me know if you would want to take it for a spin.
Would love to try it! 12$/month is a bit steep for my pockets right now. I have yet to realize a single dollar with Vatfy ;)
Oh yes, I get that. It is best to start off handling the outreach manually. Then employ a tool like ours when you are ready to scale.
The $12/month is justified only if it brings in more dollar. So if you are looking to run cold outreach, I will be happy to give you a pro trial account. You can easily measure direct dollar brought in (by MurList) during the trial and decide if it justifies the cost.
I prefer personal, but it highly depends on the volume. You won't email to 1000 users manually. :)
True. At the moment the number of signups are completely manageable by hand :) But I agree, having something automated would make a lot of sense.
this is something i do almost always... in fact, i try to never miss an opportunity:

Yes, do it personally, it will help a lot in knowing what exactly the customer needs.
If you haven’t read Paul Graham’s Do Things that Don’t Scale article, I highly recommend it.
These are your first users, you should understand intimately why they signed up and what their problems are. If I were you I would send a manual email along the lines of:
Be personal and authentic, people have learned to switch off from generic marketing.
Personally email but not just to thank them. You needs to solicit feedback from them. Ask everyone who will hear you to give you feedback on your product. It’s the most important thing you can do to help grow.
Cool. Would you rather ask for a 1-1 feedback session or send out a survey? The first could lead to my time being blocked by strangers (sending a Calendly link for example), the latter could be automated, but rather limited by the types of pre-defined questions I set up via the survey?
Keep it simple at first. I would just say something like "I'd really love your feedback on what you've seen so far. Are you finding it useful? Anything I can do to make it more useful?"
I have found that people are way more like to reply to a simple question than they ever are to click through a survey or get on a call.
Automate it and offer a free onboarding session. Put in a Calendly link. If they book, you can squeeze them for insights.
A great idea. Will do that!
In addition to the automated email I sometimes send a personal email afterwards, if I have the headspace to do so. Until now I figured those personal emails get a better response than those others.
Slightly related to this, I have been thinking about abolishing those fancy email templates in favour of plain text emails. The response is better, and throw in some randomized email time and I'm sure most recipients will not be able to tell whether I sent them, or told a computer to do so.
Hah, that is amazing. I have been using plain text emails for a while now as well and you are right. The response rate is a lot better than completely fancied out html emails.
I will get cracking on those personal emails! Thanks!
