Sorry for the slightly clickbaity title. PH seems useless to me, though.
Today I launched a product there for the second time. It's again a product that is doing really well in the real world. It seems it will be completely ignored on PH, again.
I suspect PH is only effective if you already have a community of "product people" ready to boost your launch. Or maybe if your product caters to "product people" specifically. Personally I don't see the appeal of the platform as a normal user, as most of the content is advertorial.

Product Hunt is indeed useless if you're not well prepared for the launch. As you say, if you don't have people to back you up the day of the launch, your product will almost be invisible. Yesterday I came accross this guide explaining the steps before actually launching, in case it can help you either now or in the future: https://blog.spreadtheworld.net/posts/how-to-post-producthunt-detailled-guide/
Meanwhile I'm gonna check your launch, comment and upvote you ;)
Thanks!
I read similar posts to prepare the launches. I think not specifically that one. I have a tendency not to follow instructions strictly, but I tried.
I do have an audience composed of actual users, but it seems it does not overlap at all with PH users. For example, today I sent a newsletter to 5k subscribers, and that seems to have resulted in zero upvotes. It makes sense, I don't think anyone I know outside of the maker world knows what PH is.
PH creates a primary emotion of FOMO. It's impossible to read it daily for a sane person.
Right. Who goes "let's browse PH and find solutions to problems I didn't know I had"?
Could not agree more
It works and I got 40+ sales. You just need to prep for it. Lemme know if you have any questions.

Thanks for your post. I already launched, though.
I think this line from your post sums it up:
"Building something valuable for the maker target market"
My product is not specific for makers. It does really well in the real world, but its audience does not overlap with PH's.
The fact that my post is not available on the home page (even if you click to see the less popular products of the day) is not helping either.
Then if you search for the product and eventually find it, the gif thumbnail is broken. It was fine in the preview and it's fine inside the product page. Sigh...
The GIF thumbnails don't play automatically these days on PH
It seemed like some do. But not mine, and the first frame was blank. I updated it and it's fine now.
Thanks
