Should you launch on AppSumo? 🤔

We actually launched ruttl in 2021 on Appsumo and for us it was overall a good experience, we learned a lot about our users, received and implemented a lot of new features and basically got some really good feedback. You can read more about our launch here

AppSumo works for some things but not others. One of the key things is to get spotlighted where AppSumo takes a large chunk. But you need to ask for it and you need to have a polished app. If your app isn't polished, the onboarding sucks, etc work on that before going for AppSumo.

For me AppSumo is a great way to get your first users from a very involved community. "Sumolings" are very helpful with providing feedback and reporting bugs etc.

However, it's a very price-sensitive base of users to get 'involved' with, and once-off licenses for software is something that potential future investors may see as red flags (as seen on here from other founders).

I see AppSumo as a great way to 'raise funds' for my platform, but always keep a clear vision of how to 'transform' the business into a SaaS in future.

Definitely! AppSumo is great for gaining genuine users, especially in the early stages of your product. Another great platform would be G2.

I currently have Keyframes Studio on AppSumo, and the feedback from the users I get is incredibly useful, not to mention the early boost to your revenue that you can use to grow your product even more.

The only thing not clear to me is when it makes sense to cut the cord, and remove your product from AppSumo, because I believe this model is not so sustainable.

I explored AppSumo! I feel like it's a pretty interesting option for early stages, it easily makes sense for products that are paid tier only (not free or free trial). If you have a freemium model, then it makes sense if you have paid tiers that are focused on businesses (e.g. seats, group pricing) already built out. So yeah, good for early stages, but more for exiting beta in terms of maturity, not for prototype, alpha, or early beta when the business model isn't established. Hope this helps! And definitely take with a grain of salt these are only my 2 cents!
