Hey IH!
It's been a while. But I'm excited to be sharing a my new-ish podcast, The Sh*t You Don't Learn in School.
I started this podcast around 6 months ago with @crosser.
We started with a 30-day challenge, to get the hang of the craft. And even though the quality of those 30 weren't amazing, we slowed things down after and now publish weekly.
Since we improved the quality, our numbers have gone up and we recently hit a few exciting milestones:
You can see all of our milestones here!
And if you're a podcaster wondering how we've grown... read on.
Let me start by saying that podcast growth is HARD.
We've tested a ton of things (and we'll be doing a podcast episode on exactly this), but one (perhaps non-obvious) tactic that has worked wonders for us: Twitter prompts.
You can read a little more about our strategy here, but here's the tip:
Don't start by tweeting out your episode link. Not only does Twitter de-prioritize external links, but people don't engage much with a link.
Instead, if you start with with a tweet related to your episode topic, that will have a higher likelihood of catching someone's attention. Perhaps it's a hot take. Perhaps it's an inquisitive question.
If it does end up gaining traction and you have someone's attention, THEN you can really cleanly insert your episode link or clip in.
Here are a couple examples:
I've also appended them to popular tweets like this, but on a relative basis, they don't drive as much impact because they're less specific. For example, this one also drove around 1k clicks, but compared to the reach of that tweet (nearly 100k likes), the results aren't very significant.
Like I said, we'll be releasing an episode in the next month or so on all the things that have worked for us re: podcast growth, because I've been so surprised at the lack of good advice out there on the topic. If you have any podcast growth suggestions, drop 'em below!
On that note, if you want to check out out pod, you can do so at here, follow our new Twitter account here, or subscribe to our milestones here.
I started listening to your podcast after hearing you on MFM. Just wanted to say thanks for the great content and congratulations on your well-deserved growth! 💪
Thank you so much!!!
@stephsmith, I love that you started this with a 30 day-challenge. I'm always SO inspired by the way you dive right into things! Thanks so much for sharing here. (And really enjoying the podcast - the episode on finding meaning in death and the one on overcoming impostor syndrome were especially good.) 🔥
Thank you so much!!! Any topic suggestions that you'd like to see us cover? 💙
ooooh that's a good question! You've covered so many amazing topics already. Personally, I love hearing from you on things like:
I so enjoy following your journey, @stephsmith. Thanks for continuing to share with us! 💖
Lots of good ideas! Added these to our list of requests. Thanks Teela! 😊
Congrats, it's a really decent result to me.
Are you happy with buzzsprout?
Thanks! And yes, so far!
People do this with Facebook as well. A facebook post as a hook and the link in the comments.
Now that I see this - I think I get it. I always see people joking underneath their viral tweet"Ok, check out my _______" underneath. I thought they were just gladly trying to take advantage of their viral moment, but didn't realize there was a whole strategy behind it.
I think it's a bit of both. People realized that without a CTA on Twitter, people would like your tweet and then move on!
That is an interesting feature of Twitter. Btw, how did you make the gif previews of the text from the podcasts?
Do you mean the clips? I use Descript for them, but there are other tools like Headliner that also do the trick!
Thank you, Descript looks great!
Subscribed! Question though, do podcast authors see subscriptions through Overfast? How do they pop up?
Thank you so much! Most podcast analytics platforms will only allow you to see the listen numbers. Not sure about Overcast!
How many people do you want to subscribe to the podcast, ultimately?
Is there a specific goal to hit a certain number to help sell a product? Or is it to be as famous as possible, maybe 10x Tim Ferris’s audience and become the subject of other people’s podcasts, videos, books, etc?
How do you reason about this?
Good question. We currently have a 50k download/month goal, since subscribers on their own are really hard to track. You can track on specific podcast apps that provide that number, like Castbox, but that's it.
On the note of reasoning it, I honestly don't have a wonderful answer.
I think it's two things:
I plan to create future products, but this isn't necessarily a specific route to that.
Congratulations for this milestone, Steph!
Quick questions-
That's it for now! :)
Thank you!
These are very useful points for sharing. Thank you.
