The Decade of Community

You could change the word “design” for “community” and a lot of this would make a ton of sense:

That was the decade of code. Now, we are moving into the decade of community: One where community, not just code, is at the center of product development and successful organizations.

Companies like YEN (!!!), Zoom, and many others are changing not only who buys and deploys software and how we work, but also our fundamental, table-stakes expectations for what a great product is.

We expect better, we deserve better, we demand better… it’s no longer optional to have good community.

I’m calling it… by the year 2030 we’ll be seeing much more about how this decade was, truly, the decade of community-centric thinking.

Really hope so. Banking on it.
dedica.co is a surfing community with a marketplace :) I think ecommerce will change significantly pulled by community-thinking over the next decade.

Hey mate fellow surfer here based in Netherlands! I am also about to start building services for surfers and find ways to create value for the community. Here is my story https://www.getrevue.co/profile/jimzarkadas

If you want I am up for giving (free) design feedback and advice on a call so that you can also describe me the idea a bit more :-) I am working on product design for the last 7 years so you can ask me anything you want around this topic.

      Cheers!

        Hey Jim.
Very cool. What are you building? Just started following your journey.

Absolutely yes. Let's connect. Building Dedica changed my view on a lot of things. Design is hard. It's been one of the most difficult things for me.

        1. 1

I am working on validating some ideas about live beach reports and car sharing for surfers. My twitter is https://twitter.com/jimzarkadas, DM me and we can schedule a call from there :-)

i just signed up! i like the passwordless entry!

      1. 2

Awesome!!! You rock. Are you a surfer?
Any feedback please send it. (there are lots of inconsistencies 😅)

        1. 1

i'm not, but, i wanted to check it out! wasn't sure how folks are engaging... how are things looking from your end?

          1. 2

slow. The concept and message is not getting across yet.
Those who get it (still first degree friends) absolutely love it and want more people and more brands on it.
Really need to get in front of more people and have better messaging.

            1. 1

what do you think is missing? what have your users told you they need?

              1. 2

Users who get it - want more products and more user-generated content (more profiles like them, more reviews, more photos, videos). Just like we IH want to have more

Users who don't - hidden value, hidden features, hidden content, "didn't know it was this or that" - Design is hard!

                What's missing:

                1. Make surfers share more.
They want the info from users like them but when it comes for them to review products, share videos, photos imposter syndrome kicks-in.

                2. Clear path to grow user base
Haven't figured out best content type to grow awareness on other platforms.
Lots coming up - newsletter, some brands want to engage, blog.

                3. Keep feeding the supply side with more products, brands and content that I can add.

                4. Improve usability

                1. 1

that's a lot. is that the prioritization too?

                  1. 1

Yes. 1 and 2. Reduce the barrier for surfers to share and spread the word. 3 is mostly admin. 4 is building, it's fun.

                    1. 2

@8bit no more nested replies. No, that's the thing. Not much sharing going on.

                    2. 1

i wonder what would make them share more... i bet they are already sharing, right?

  2. 2

110% agree with this - I am hugely biased, but I am already been seeing the start of what will be a huge wave/tsunami of how Community plays into the sales cycle, how it can impact expansion deals, how prospects could care less about another white paper but would instead rather jump into the Community to see what is really going on with the product. Heck, the next two-three years alone are going to be a night and day difference!

    1. 1

i can't wait. i spent years in defi and learned a ton about how tough it is to survive those first few years!

i hope to help keep a lot more of those startups alive with a community-centric approach!

  3. 2

I believe that community and co-creation will come to the forefront in the next decade. It will be interesting to see how the principles of the competition will change.

    1. 1

      totally. 💯!!

  4. 2

A new generation of building is coming up. I think it applies especially well in the US and western countries.

    1. 1

      i believe it's happening everywhere!

      1. 3

China has a quite different market. Private paid communities r getting less popular. They r going for hardcore growth hacking. Last time I read some articles from China. they kinda think Community building is a fraud. Which is very strange to understand. But I guess the culture differences played heavy here

        1. 1

          do you have that article?

          1. 2

yeah it's in Chinese. for chinese market its kinda true https://cloud.tencent.com/developer/news/424565

            1. 1

thank you for this. reading now!

              1. 2

let me know what u think. Chinese market is more competitive IMO,and when everyone is offering free stuff, its hard to charge ppl. unless u have a unique idea. which is also hard in china. And in the heart of the users there doesnt like to be charged. culture plays heavy here

                1. 1

i loved this article. wow. what great thoughts.

i don't think anything trumps customer service... so... i'm going to focus on that!

                  1. 2

What do u mean by trumps customer service? Just curious lol. It’s a good article bc it has a lot of breakdowns on community building I think. While the logic is kinda unsound, the knowledge is there.

  5. 2

Yes, we are moving toward it building products powered by people's opinions and feedback. And exciting to be in the space.

    1. 2

are you building anything specific? i'd love to know!

      1. 2

Habitate.io - simple tool to quickly add a community discussion page on any website and engage with customers. Communities have proven to be a fantastic vessel for building a closer relationship between businesses and customers. Builts Goodwill, trust, and loyalty. We want to make that happen for many businesses, start-ups, and makers out there.

        1. 1

whoa, this is so neat. you should build a product page here on IH!

          1. 2

Yes working on it, We doing part of revenue via stripe and rest other apps. Unsure how to add that in here.

            1. 1

              it might not be working.

              1. 2

Done, I guess pending for my approval. I decided to connect the only stripe, anyway that's how we decided to go about processing payments in the future anyway.

                1. 1

                  glad you're here!
