Thoughts on traveling in an RV?

Extremely long story short, a couple friends and I are getting an RV to travel all of the US in after we finish high school, this is for charity and the community, to pay for our college education, and for us to have an awesome experience... Has anyone done anything similar?!

    We currently travel full time in an RV, and have been for the lasts 8 months, with absolutely zero plans to stop. I run multiple business' and am writing a book. Currently sitting in sunny SoCal in the middle of the wilderness.

    We stay exclusively on public lands for free. RV park and campgrounds are not for us. We prefer nature. Never had an issue not getting internet and we stay in remote locations exclusively.

      Do you have any specific app to find public lands and places to park for free? What do you use for a reliable internet connection?

        Yes! So much to list here but I'll keep it brief.

        I use Campendium (https://campendium.com) as my primary source to find locations to camp. For Internet I have service through both Verizon and AT&T.

          Thanks for this, actually following you on Twitter and reading your blog, we have been planning to do this for a while with our 2 toddlers, your blog is extremely helpful, can't wait for the book. Some posts or book chapter about security tips would be nice to read.

    Hi Ethan,

    I did something similar. I had a goal to travel the US in a travel trailer and truck. I ultimately pulled it off after a year of planning. I was working as a Product Designer for a startup and they had allowed me to go remote after working with them for a while. I got on the road for about two months.

    It ended up being a lot of additional stress while trying to work full-time, maintain the RV and truck, plan out travel ideas, and care for my girlfriend and our four cats. We stopped traveling and ending up just buying a house. The hardest part was just having to work and bring in an income. This made very little time for actual travel or anything else. RV life makes even the basics hard to manage (water, power, internet, A/C, heat). I will get back out on the road again at some point soon when I have financial freedom.

    • Self-reliance is a must
    • Extreme minimalism is recommended
    • Have a detailed travel plan
    • Get a large van/sprinter van, RV's require a lot more learning/patience and can't go as many places.
    • Rent and test the lifestyle for even just a week
    • Have a good internet setup/gear and Verizon and AT&T plans. Finding good spots for wifi was hard. (If you need to get online often)
    • RV's are hard to park in public places unlike a van or sprinter van
    • RV parks are expensive ($40/night avg) and finding free places to stay can be tricky. Free spots are the way to go but usually out of the way and the internet is harder to come by.
    • Ideally, you have outdoor experience if you plan on going to national parks and such.

    Hi! I'm currently living in a van in Europe and have been for a year, and it's simply awesome.

    • Lowest cost of life possible (300€ a month for 2 persons)
    • Total freedom
    • I'm currently parked on an actual beach in Italy (no coronavirus in sight)

    It forces me to build businesses with geographical freedom in mind and keep me away from distractions.

    Have a great trip! I am currently full time traveling and loving it. Try and go out of your comfort zone and keep an open mind, cheers.
