Three Questions To Ask Before Everything Hits The Fan

My boss is a reminder of why I read IndieHackers and why I keep working on my side SaaS projects. But whether you are a business owner, a hobbyist trying to make money from your side projects, or even if you have your first employee, who is undoubtedly going to make a few mistakes on their way to a better employee.

The constant reminder any company should have when it comes to employees or staff: We're all human and to blow up on anyone, even if it was a mistake, is not how you should act. The questions of accusing someone of making a mistake and really shaming them for it and you have to ask yourself: Was it worth it? Did it really make you feel better to do that? Are you going to sleep better at night?

For my particular situation, I investigated my own accusations and found the evidence to prove myself innocent of the situation: i wasn't at work and had gone home. Not much fight against evidence that puts 3 other employees in the code during a time I was long gone and emails with signatures on them.

Anyways, the three questions I always ask myself before I really make it a big deal.

  1. Did anyone get hurt?
  2. Did anyone die?
  3. Did we lose a lot of money?

If the answer is no to these three questions, than work with the situation like a reasonable human being who can logically come up with a plan to make things better and ensure it doesn't happen again. Now.. to post those three questions on my boss' desk, haha.

  1. 2

Sorry Matt. That doesn't sound fun. My last boss was a big reason why I went off on my own
